탐구의 궁극적 대상으로서 ‘삶의 총체적 이상’

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 듀이의 경험개념, 즉 교변작용으로서 경험과 탐구방법으로서 경험의 아이디어에 기초하여 자연의 성격과 탐구대상의 성격에 대해 검토하였다. 전통철학은 인간 경험과는 아무런 관련이 없는 이데아의 세계가 있다는 형이상학적 가정을 토대로 하여 이 가정을 정당화하는 거대한 철학체계, 즉 이원론적 철학체계를 형성해 왔다. 듀이는 이원론에 대한 대안 탐색을 중요한 철학적 탐구주제로 삼아 왔다. 듀이의 시도는 알게 되는 과정과 의미 있는 삶을 사는 과정 즉 경험의 과정에 대한 진솔하면서도 치밀한 분석을 기초로 하여 앎과 삶의 성격을 올바로 설명하는 데에 있었다. 실제로 알게 되는 경험적 과정에 대한 분석을 통해 볼 때에 탐구의 궁극적 대상은 이데아(Idea) 즉 형상이나 본질이 아니라, 아이디얼(Ideal) 즉 삶의 총체적 이상이다. 그리고 아이디얼을 대상으로 하는 탐구는 마음 밖에 있는 지식을 대상으로 하는 것이 아니라, 마음 전체를 배경으로 하여 새로운 마음 전체를 대상으로 하는 것이다. 또한 아이디얼을 대상으로 하는 탐구는 진리에 도달하면 끝나는 것이 아니라, 영원성과 경원감을 특징으로 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this article is to clarify and redefine the nature and object of inquiry in the light of Dewey s notion of the continuity between experience and nature. For the traditional philosophy which traces back to Plato s metaphysical assumption, the object of inquiry is to be the world of Idea which is believed to be prior to and thoroughly disconnected from human experience. The knowledge, derived from successful inquiry into Idea, is taken to be the complete and permanent truth. Seen from Dewey s view, experience is to transact human being with nature or environment. Pure nature, which do not have connection with human being in any way, could not be revealed and known to the latter. The instant it is perceived by and transacted with human being, nature is changed and transformed into a new one. Nature, to be denoted, observed, and stated, is to become a humanized one. There is no such thing as Idea or pure nature of preexistent permanent being. According to the continuity between experience and nature, experience operates as the guide, liberator, inquirer, and transformer of nature. When it is revealed by experience, nature consists of the real and the possible. These are produced by experience and inseparably interrelated with each other in experience. Ideal refers to the integrated whole of a number of the real and the possible. In conclusion, the object of inquiry is not Idea which is fixed and permanent, but Ideal which changes and grows in accordance with the development of experience. The target of inquiry is the whole mind which embodies Ideal; the inquiry can be characterized by endlessness and remoteness.
