국문 초록

초등도덕과교육의 근본은 교과로서의 도덕을 가르치고 배우는 과정을 통하여 심성함양을 추구하는 것을 목적으로 한다는 데에 있다. 그러나 개인적, 집단적 이익이 우선시되는 시대적 분위기 속에서 초등도덕과교육은 심성 함양이라는 근본 의미에서 벗어나서 실제적 문제해결이라는 지말적 관심에 이끌리는 근본 망각의 역정을 밟아왔다. 초등도덕과교육을 그 근본으로 되돌리려는 노력은 삶과 교육을 그림처럼 비추어내는 이론다운 이론의 조명 속에서 도덕과교육과 심성함양의 관련을 올바르게 인식하고 규정하는 방향으로 이루어져야 한다. 초등도덕과교육에 관한 이론적 이해의 핵심은 교과가 그 자체로서 도덕적 의미를 가진다는 인식과, 교과의 도덕적 의미를 도덕교육의 내용으로 다루는 것이 도덕적 심성의 함양에 필수적 요소가 된다는 인식으로 요약될 수 있다. 앞으로 초등도덕과는 실제적 문제해결을 위한 능력이나 태도를 길러주는 교과가 아니라 교과의 의미, 즉 교과를 배우며 살아가는 삶의 의미에 관한 이론적 이해를 통하여 심성함양에 기여하는 교과로 새롭게 인식될 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

The recurrent status crisis of Moral Education in elementary school curriculum results from the prevailing misconception of moral education. The metaphor of “root and branches” used by Professor Hong-Woo Lee can be relevantly applied to finding out a corrective of the misconception. Nowadays, moral education tends to be conceived mostly as preparing the students for solving daily practical problems. But it must be nothing more than the branch-aspect of moral education, which is contrasted to the root-aspect of moral education. Moral education should be rooted in cultivating the primordial mind or mind in its original nature . The crisis has been caused by the insisting tendency to neglect the latter aspect. The two conceptions of moral education are implied in the distinction between the two aspects of morality: the primordial mind and its manifested function to solve daily practical problems. It lies on the root of Elementary Moral Education to cultivate the primordial mind by providing the theoretical understandings on the moral dimension of life and education. Elementary Moral Education as a most important channel for cultivating the primordial mind cannot escape from its unstable position in school curriculum, in so far as the practitioners of Elementary Moral Education are preoccupied with the (mis)belief that it should serve as an effective means to facilitate the daily problem-solving. The practice of Elementary Moral Education needs to be reviewed in the light of the proper educational theory which is the source of understandings on the moral dimension of teaching school subjects. And, the theory should constitute the indispensable content of moral education for cultivating the primordial mind. The future of Elementary Moral Education pivots on how the educational theory can be respected as the content of moral education.
