국문 초록

도덕적 인간상은 교육받은 인간의 모습을 지칭하는 것으로서, 교과와 무관하게, 교과 밖에서 사전에 규정될 수 있는 것이 아니라 교과와 관련하여, 교과 안에서 사후에 규정될 수 있는 것이다. 중용에 의하면, 교과 안, 즉 마음에 관한 관심은 性과 情의 개념, 그리고 中과 和의 개념에 의하여 구체화된다. 性과 情의 개념은 마음을 기술적 관점에서 규정하는 것으로서, 마음은 표현 이전의 마음과 표현 이후의 마음이라는 중층을 이루고 있다는 것을 보여 준다. 이에 비하여 中과 和의 개념은 마음을 규범적 관점에서 특징짓는 것으로서, 性은 우리가 받아들이고 따라야 할 표준이라는 것을 분명히 해준다. 중용에 제시되어 있는 도덕적 인간상으로서의 君子는 실제적 문제 해결을 목적으로 하는 사람을 가리키는 것이 아니라 심성함양을 업으로 삼는 사람을 가리킨다.

영문 초록

The well-educated person cannot be described independently of the subject matter. To be precise, he can be described only in terms of the standard which is immanent in the subject matter. The concern for the such standard leads us to the Neo-confucianist theory of mind centering around the concepts dealt with in the Doctrine of the Mean, such as the Nature and the Emotion(性情, hsing ch ing), the Equilibrium and the Harmony(中和, zhong he). The Nature and the Emotion define what may be called the double layer structure of mind . The Nature as the not-yet-manifested, the upper layer, refers to the invisible standard of the Emotion as the already-manifedsted, lower layer. Contrasted to the Nature and the Emotion, the Equilibrium and the Harmony denote the same thing as the Nature only to characterize it from the normative point of view. It is worth reminding that the noble man as an exemplar of the well-educated person is characterized not by solving practical problems, but by cultivating of the mind. In this sense, the noble man is an exemplar of a well-educated person in the moral sense of the term.
