국문 초록

교육은 ‘심성’을 함양하는 활동이며, 교육이론은 그 심성함양에 관한 설명이다. 성리학적 개념으로서의 심성은 교과에 논리적 가정으로 들어 있는 ‘표현 이전의 표준’ 또는 ‘하늘의 명령’을 가리킨다. 성리학의 교육이론은 교과공부를 통하여 어떻게 ‘하늘의 명령’을 실현하게 되는지를 설명하며, 이 점에서 그것은 불가피하게 종교이론에 이르게 된다. 다른 한편, 종교이론은, 종교의 핵심 개념인 聖이 어떤 것인지를 구체적으로 드러내려면, 聖 그 자체와 다른 것이 될 수 없는 심성이 함양되는 과정을 설명하지 않으면 안된다. 그리하여 종교이론은 불가피하게 교육이론에 이르게 된다. 교육이론과 종교이론은 심성함양을 설명하는 한에서만 온전한 것으로 되며, 성리학은 온전한 의미의 교육이론, 다시 말하여 온전한 의미의 종교이론의 모범적인 사례를 보여준다. 여기서 교육이론과 종교이론이 온전한 의미를 지닌다는 것은 양자가 ‘심성함양을 위한 실천을 바로 그 실천에 의하여 설명하는 담론 형식으로서의 메타프락시스’를 나타낸다는 것을 뜻한다.

영문 초록

The Neo-Confucianist theory of education presents an argument that education, in its proper sense, consists in the cultivation of the Mind-Nature which is equivalent to the Heaven s decree. It thus inevitably leads to the theory of religion. On the other hand, the theory of religion, if it is to make clearer the essential nature of the Holy, is required to explain the process of realizing the Holy which is equivalent to the Mind-Nature. It thus inevitably leads to the educational theory as is proposed by Neo-Confucianism. In this line of thought, the educational theory, in its full sense, turns out to be the theory of religion, and the theory of religion, in its full sense, turns out to be the educational theory. In Neo-Confucianism, these two kinds of theory compose a single whole. Thus, we may find in it an exemplar of both the educational theory and the theory of religion. The uniqueness of Neo-Confucianism leads us to the thought that both theories can fully realize their character only when they offer a satisfactory explanation of the cultivation of the Mind-Nature, and, in either case, the theoretical activity is itself an activity of cultivating the Mind-Nature. If this is right, both theories could be characterized by the same family of discourses, that is, metapraxis in which the practice of cultivating the Mind-Nature is justified only by the practice itself.
