선비정신의 개념 정립을 위한 試論

국문 초록

선비정신을 ‘우리의 전통에서 확립된 이상적 정신상태’로 규정하는 데에는 별 무리가 없는 듯하다. 그러나 이 정도의 규정으로 선비정신의 개념이 명확해진 것은 아니며, 자칫 이 규정은, ‘선비정신을 아는 것이 중요한 것이 아니라 선비정신을 실천하는 것이 중요하다’는 견해로 연결될 수 있다. 이 견해는 현재 우리 사회에서 통용되는 모든 바람직한 덕목을 선비정신으로 간주하게 한다는 점에서 선비정신의 실체를 드러내는 데에 오히려 장애가 된다. 선비정신은 그것을 지닌 선비와의 관련에서 모색되어야 하며, 나아가 그것이 바탕으로 하고 있는 학문의 의미와 성격에 의하여 그 실체가 철저하게 한정되어야 한다. 이 관점을 견지하면, 선비정신의 실체는 오늘날 교사가 하는 일의 성격에 의하여 분명하게 드러날 수 있다. 이 글에서 제시한 선비정신의 개념에 관한 탐색은 문자 그대로 시론으로서의 의미를 지닌다. 선비정신은, 그것의 바탕이 된 학문(유학 또는 성리학)을 오늘날의 학문으로 대체해도 의미상의 변화가 없게 되는지, 학문과 인격은 어떤 관련을 맺는지, 나아가 선비정신은 紳士道 등과 같은 유사한 정신자세와 어떻게 구분되는지 등의 질문을 심도 있게 다룸으로써 보다 분명해질 수 있다.

영문 초록

There seems to be no doubt about the view that the spirit of Sunbi could be conceived of as an ideal mentality which has been established through our tradition. However, the view requires clarification. Sometimes it leads us to the thought that what is important is not to know the spirit of Sunbi but to practice the spirit of Sunbi. This thought provides an obstacle to the right understanding of the spirit of Sunbi in that the spirit of Sunbi is assumed to include all of the virtues which are desirable in our society today. The spirit of Sunbi must be understood in relation to Sunbi who has it, and seen to be based on, or derived from, the academic studies which underlie it. Judging from this point of view, it becomes possible to suppose that the concept of the spirit of Sunbi could be made more clear by examining the nature of the task which teachers perform in their classrooms today. This essay is only an initial account. More precise account will be achieved only when questions including the following are taken seriously: whether the concept of the spirit of Sunbi still remains acceptable even when the Confucianism or Neo-Confucianism from which it originates has been replaced by the modern academic studies, what the relation between the pursuit of knowledge and the cultivation of mind is, and what the difference between the spirit of Sunbi and other similar mentality such as gentlemanship is.
