국문 초록

성리학의 덕치의 정치철학은 선진유학을 계승하여 발전시킨 것으로, 주희와 진량의 ‘왕패논쟁’은 성리학에서의 덕치의 의미, 즉 덕치의 목적과 그 실현방도를 다소간 세부적으로 고찰하는 계기를 제공해준다. ‘정치적 현실주의’의 입장을 취하는 진량은 당대 남송이 직면한 국가적 위난에 대한 주희의 견해에 대하여 날카로운 비판을 제시하고 있다. 덕치에 관한 주희의 견해는 이러한 진량과의 논쟁의 과정에서 보다 뚜렷하게 드러난다. 주희의 견해는 그의 형이상학(理氣論)에 나타난 ‘중층구조’의 아이디어에 기초하고 있으며, 이에 따르면 덕치는 곧 ‘天理의 실현’을 목적으로 하는 정치의 개념을 뚜렷하게 보여준다. 이러한 정치의 개념은, 孔孟의 사상에 배태되어 있던 사상을 계승·발전시킨 것으로, 이에 의하면 정치는 교육과 동일한 목적을 추구하는 것으로 된다. 즉 정치와 교육은 심성함양을 위한 실천의 두 측면, 즉 치인적 측면과 수기적 측면을 가리키는 것이 된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to reveal the concept of the “rule of virtue”(德治) of Neo-Confucianism, especially focused on Chu Hsi’s idea. The debate on the “Method of King and Hegemon” between Chu Hsi and Ch’en Liang, presents the proper context to understand its conceptual meaning and political significance. Ch’en Liang, as criticizer, attacks the ideas of Chu Hsi on the duties and method of ruler in which cultivating inner virtue of ruler has priority to solving governmental problems. Against Ch’en Liang’s criticism, Chu Hsi, as orthodox successor of Confucius and Mencius, reveal and demonstrates his own ideas and its significances. Chu Hsi’s idea of “rule of virtue” is based on the metaphysical theory of Li and Chi(理氣論), and the metaphysics presents ‘the two-fold structure’ of mind and world. From this perspective, the aim of politics is the realization of Li, or Heavenly Principle(天理) on the world. This concept of politics is radically different from Ch’en Liang’s idea which has more similarity to the today’s opinion of it. According to Chu Hsi’s view, cultivating oneself and ruling others(or solving political problems) are not separated practices but only distinctive aspects of practice, and the former has logical priority to the latter. Education and politics have the same aim but have different methods of their realization.
