국문 초록

“여래는 확정되지 않는 진리를 전달한다.” 이것은 세존이 수보리에게 재차 확인하는 말이다. 불확정적 진리가 무엇인지는 설명되어야 할 문제이다. 그러나 본 논문은 그러한 진리가 어떻게 전달되는지 파악하는 데에 초점을 두고 있다. 세존은 무한부정의 어법을 구사하며 확정되지 않는 진리를 전달한다. 그도 그럴 것이, 확정되지 않는 진리는 개별적 의미 요소로서, 혹은 실체적 의미요소로서 전달될 수 없다. 하지만 확정되지 않는 진리는 그것의 성격상 끝없이 전달되어야 한다. 여기서, 세존이 전달하려는 것은 반야—즉, 무분별지에서 모든 사물과 현상의 ‘참다운 모습’을 통찰하는 지혜—이며, 그것은 ‘깨달음의 마음이 일으키는 작용과 양상’을 가리킨다. 아닌 게 아니라, 세존은 분별지를 일으키는 경험적 마음이 아니라 무분별지로 표현되는 마음 그 자체를 전달하려고 한다. 따라서 본 연구는 말로써 마음—또는, 반야—을 전달하는 사태를 분석하고 교과교육과 관련하여 언어와 개념의 지위에 대하여 논의한다. 여기서, 무한부정은 마음—또는, 반야—을 개념적으로 이해하는 것이 아니라 실제적으로 체험하게 하는 방편으로 파악된다. 즉, 무한부정은 언어와 개념에 ‘실천’의 힘을 추동하는 특별한 전달방법으로 파악된다. 그리고 말로써 마음을 전달하는 세존의 행위, 달리 말하여 불확정적 진리를 전달하는 세존의 행위는 교과교육에 대한 인식의 전환을 요청하는 것으로 파악된다. 교사가 교과를 가르치는 행위는 비단, (객관적 대상 세계로서의) 지식을 전달하는 것이 아니라, (주관적 대상 세계로서의) 마음을 전달하는 일이기도 하다. 이런 관점에서 보면 교사는 교과를 불확정적 진리로 전달해야 하며 그때 비로소 교과교육은 살아있는 사유를 전달하는 역동적인 활동이 된다. 마음은 확정된 진리로 전달되는 그 무엇일 수 없다.

영문 초록

“Buddha, the Incarnation of Truth communicates the uncertain truth.” This is the precept that Subhūti was told repeatedly by his master. The question of what is the uncertain truth must be explained. But this thesis focused on the means of communication of such truth. Buddha communicates the uncertain truth by phrasing infinite negation. Indeed, the uncertain truth can not be transferred as an individual element or a tangible element of meaning, but in its own nature, must be transferred infinitely. The very thing that Buddha tries to communicate is ‘Prajñā’, the wisdom of an insight into true nature of reality of things and phenomena, which indicates the process and the condition of bringing buddhahood into being. That is, Buddha intends to communicate not empirical knowledge or thoughts, but mind itself which is represented as undiscriminating knowledge. Therefore, this thesis attempts to analyze the processes or situations of communicating the mind, Prajñā, and to explain the status of the language and the concepts in relation to the subject matter education. In the processes of communicating, infinite negation is comprehended as an expedience for experiencing the mind, Prajñā practically, not conceptually. In other word, infinite negation is comprehended as a special means of communication which drives language and concepts into being practiced. And the Buddha’s activities of communicating mind with words, his activities of communicating the uncertain truth call up transforming the way of understanding the subject matter education. A teacher’s activities are not merely teaching knowledges as the world of objectivity, but also communicating mind as the world of subjectivity. In this respect, a teacher should teach subject matter as the uncertain truth and then the subject matter education can be such dynamic activities as communicating living speculation. Mind is not such thing as can be communicated as a certain truth.
