국문 초록

본 연구는 플라톤 철학에 담겨있는 교육학적 함의를 ‘시적 대화’(conversation)의 관점에서 새롭게 해석하기 위한 것이다. 플라톤이 대화편을 시적으로 저술한 것은 시 또는 문학적 양식을 빌리거나 도구로 삼아 자신의 철학적 아이디어를 표현하기 위한 것이 아니다. 그의 대화편은 기존의 시의 한계를 넘어서는 새로운 시를 ‘적극적으로’ 말한 것이며, 그 시는 바로 그가 꿈꾼 철학이다. 오우크쇼트의 시적 대화의 관점에서 보면, 플라톤은 소크라테스가 헌신한 철학자의 영웅적 삶의 다양한 국면을 각각의 대화편을 통하여 상이한 이미지로 그려내었다. 그러나 오우크쇼트는 철학이 자신의 목소리를 잃고 실제적 활동으로서의 정치 또는 종교의 목소리로 변질될 때의 위험을 감지하고 플라톤 철학에 대하여 비판적인 태도를 취한다. 플라톤의 ‘실재’와 ‘테오리아’(theoria)는 오우크쇼트의 시적 관조와 경이의 ‘永遠性의 相下’(sub speci aeternitatis)로의 무한한 ‘확장’(extension)이요, ‘투사’(projection)이다. 플라톤과 오우크쇼트의 관점은 교육의 상이한 측면을 조명하며, 양자는 교육 안에서 ‘대화자적 관계’로 조화를 이룰 수 있다. 플라톤의 실재에 대한 관조는 교육이 지향하는 궁극적 방향을 손가락질한다면, 오우크쇼트의 시적 관조는 그것을 향한 믿음과 소망이 싹트고 살아 숨쉬는 현재로서의 교육사태와 교육이 이루어지는 순간의 경이(驚異)를 조명하는 것으로 해석될 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to interpret the educational implication of Plato’s ‘philosophical dialogue’ in view of Oakeshott’s conception of ‘poetic conversation’. In view of Oakeshott’s poetic conversation, Plato’s dialogues is not a means to convey or express his philosophical idea by poetic (dramatic) style, but a new poetry which is superior to the old-fashioned poetry of the age, and genuine philosophy in itself. According to the Oakeshott’s poetic conversation, Plato’s dialogues have imagined the many-sided images of Socrates’ heroic life of philosopher in its various aspect, dramatically. However, Oakeshott criticizes Plato’s philosophy, because of its being liable to loss the poetic voice intimated in his philosophical dialogue and corrupt into practical voice of politics and religion. Plato’s Idea(reality) and theoria is an infinite extention and projection of Oakeshott’s poetic contemplation and delight to the sub speci aeternitatis. In view of education, Plato’s dialogue and Oakeshott’s conversation, which illuminate two different aspects of education respectably, can be harmonized and wholly conversable. Plato’s contemplation of reality, on the one hand, designates the ultimate way or purpose of education, Oakeshott’s poetic contemplation of image, on the other hand, illuminates the educational state of affair and the delightfulness of temporal moment or time of education out of which belief and hope toward the ultimate purpose and reality sprouts and grows.
