순자의 인성론

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 순자의 인성론을 메타프락시스적 관점에서 해석하는 것이다. 이제까지 순자의 성에 관한 해석은 순자의 발언을 토대로 그의 처방적 관심에 주목하여 이루어졌다. 올바른 인간 형성을 위해서는 예(禮)가 필요하며, 예는 저절로 갖춰지는 것이 아니라 인위적 노력의 산물이라는 점을 중시하면, 예가 가해지기 이전의 바탕, 즉 인간의 타고난 성(性)은 악한 것(혹은 가치중립적인 것)으로 여겨질 가능성이 있는 것이다. 그러나 순자 체계의 핵심이 수양론이라는 점에 주목하고, 성을 수양론과 관련지어 해석하면, 성은 다른 방향에서 해석될 가능성이 생긴다. 메타프락시스적 관점의 필요성은 이러한 맥락에서 제기된다. 그리하여 본 연구는 순자의 체계에 나타난 성에 관한 주장을 확인하는 데 그치는 것이 아니라, 순자의 주장 전체에 비추어 볼 때 그가 말하는 성이 어떤 형태로 나타나야 했는가를 탐색한다. 성의 원천인 천(天)이 형이상학적 성격을 가지는 것으로 이해된다면, 그리고 예가 수행의 목적으로서 형이상학적 지위를 가지게 된다면, 수행의 바탕이 되는 성에도 형이상학적 의미가 들어있다는 점을 받아들여야 한다. 이 경우 성은 수행의 논리적 가정이 되며, 이제까지의 표면적 이해에서와는 달리, 성은 악이 아니라 절대적 선(善)으로 간주된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to interpret Xunzi’s theory of human nature from the viewpoint of metapraxis. Mostly Xunzi’s human nature has been interpreted on the base of Xunzi’s mention about it, focusing his prescriptive concerns. Considering that cultivation of mind needs Ritual(禮) in Xunzi, and that Ritual is product of human artificial efforts, it is possible to regard that haman nature as disposition, to which Ritual exercises, is evil or value-neutral. But focusing that the kernel of Xunzi’s system of thought is cultivation theory of mind, and that human nature should be interpreted in relation to cultivation theory of mind, it is possible to interpret Xunzi’s human nature from another viewpoint. Necessity of metapractical viewpoint arises in this context. So the approach of this study is not to check Xunzi’s mention about human nature, but to investigate what shape Xunzi’s human nature should have been come out to, considering the totality of his assertions. If Heaven(天) is regarded as to have metaphysical nature, and Ritual to have metaphysical status as an aim of cultivation of mind, it must be accepted that human nature, which is a basis of cultivation of mind, also has metaphysical nature. In this context, human nature is presupposition of cultivation of mind. Hence Xunzi’s human nature should be considered as not evil, but absolutely good, far from ostensible understanding of it.
