국문 초록

이 글은 한국의 사위 관련 설화에 나타나는 사위와 처가의 관계를 살펴보고, 이야기에서 나타나는 ‘사위의 이미지’들을 통하여 남성 인물들에게 인식되는 ‘혼인’의 의미를 밝히고자 마련되었다. 그동안 사위 관련 설화는 주로 <거짓말 잘하여 장가든 사람>과 <바보 사위>를 중심으로 연구되었기 때문에 다양한 캐릭터의 사위는 물론 처가와 사위의 관계를 통합적인 관점에서 볼 기회가 없었다. 본 연구는 한국의 사위 관련 설화를 전반적으로 다루면서 사위가 처가와 맺는 질적 관계를 중심으로, ‘처가를 욕보이는 사위’, ‘처가에 득이 되는 사위’, ‘처가로부터 덕 보는 사위’의 세 가지 유형으로 나누었다. 이 유형들은 하나의 이야기에서 서로 조합된 양상으로 나타나는데, 가장 많은 것이 ‘처가로부터 덕 보기 위해 처가를 욕보이는 사위’이다. 그들 대부분은 가난한 노총각이나 처가에서 대우받지 못하는 남자들이며, 앙혼(仰婚) 들기 위하여 혹은 처가의 인정을 받기 위하여 처가를 속이거나 골탕을 먹인다. 이러한 행위들은 주로 ‘거짓말 잘하는 사위’, ‘꾀 많은 사위’에 의해 이루어지며, 처가에서도 이러한 캐릭터의 사위를 선호하고 있다는 것은 흥미로운 점이다. 이러한 양상은 ‘남자다운 것’으로서 관념되는 ‘힘’의 자질이 무엇인지를 보여주며, 처가와 사위 사이의 묘한 긴장감을 생성하면서 사위라는 지위의 양면성을 보여준다. 이러한 현상은 전통 혼인 제도와 가부장제 문화를 바탕으로 하고 있지만, 한편으로는 혼인 관계를 통해 남성이 성취할 수 있는 물질적 이익과 힘의 획득, 이를 통한 사회적 성장에 대한 욕구를 시사한다. 따라서 설화에서 혼인을 통하여 얻게 되는 사위라는 지위는 남성이 거쳐야 할 통과의례이자 힘겨루기에서 승자에게 주어지는 보상으로서 나타난다. 이러한 맥락에서 사위 관련 설화는 혼인을 성취〔成婚〕하는 ‘사위 되기’ 이야기와 처가에 대한 자신들의 영향력을 과시하는 ‘사위 노릇하기’ 이야기로 나눌 수 있으며, 이러한 양상은 사위 관련 설화를 남성들의 성장 서사나 희망담으로 해석할 여지를 시사한다. 또한 사위 되기로서의 이러한 입사식을 적절히 수행할 수 없는 남자는 그에 대한 반대급부이자 그림자인 바보 사위로 형상화된다.

영문 초록

This study attempts to show images of Sons-in-Law portrayed on Korean folktales and the meaning of their marriage to themselves on the narratives. We have had no chance to understand the various characters of Sons-in-Law and the relations between them and their Parents-in-Law from integrated viewing because the previous studies have been tended to focus on the specified tales like and types. Thus this study deals with the whole tales of Son-in-Law in Korean tales and tries to classify Sons-in-Law into three types as a ‘Sons-in-Law bringing shame to Parents-in-Law’, ‘Sons-in-Law helping Parents-in-Law’ and ‘Sons-in-Law getting benefits from Parents-in-Law’ which are based on their functional relationships. These types are generally combined in one narrative, and the most prominent type is the ‘Sons-in-Law bringing shame to their Parents-in-Law’, and most of them are appeared as poor men or to be treated with contempt from their Parents-in-Law, so they try to cheat their Parents-in-Law to marry their daughter who belongs to her wealthy family or be deserved better from their Parents-in-Law. The cheating behaviours are mainly committed by a ‘man telling a lie well’ and a ‘resourceful man’, besides, the ironic thing is that many of Parents-in-Law prefer such the man as their Son-in-Law. These characters like ‘telling a lie’ and ‘resourcefulness’ mean a ‘power’ to control their wife’s family for Sons-in-law and the wisdom to live well with their daughter for the Parents-in-law, and the power game that Sons-in-Low almost always lead shows the double sidedness of Son-in-Law’s position, generating a tension between them and their Parents-in-Law on the narratives. The double sidedness of their position results from the traditional wedding and marriage customs and the patriarchal society in the past in Korea, on the one hand, it shows a material benefit which they could get and their desire of social growth through by having their in-laws. Therefore, the position of Sons-in-Law is portrayed as a goal given as an initiation rite and reward to men. Conclusionally, we can perceive the tales of Son-in-Law as a ‘being Son-in-Law’ and ‘acting as a Son-in-Law’, and they are men’s initiation narrative and dream, so some men who can not perform these rites properly are represented as ‘an idiot son-in-law’ in Korean tales.
