다산은 과연 퇴계를 수용하였는가? -퇴계와 다산의 갈림길-

국문 초록

이 글은 다산이 과연 퇴계학을 수용했는가에 대한 의문을 가지고 퇴계와 다산의 연속성과 그 한계를 살펴보고, 무엇이 단절되었는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 34세 때 다산이 퇴계의 편지글을 읽고 적었던 ｢다산사숙록｣과 ｢이발기발변｣ 등을 통해 다산은 퇴계학을 수용하였고, 성리학과 일정부분 화해했다는 주장과 더 나아가 36세 배교선언에 이르는 과정 속에 퇴계의 영향이 있었다고 보는 입장은 표면적으로 그렇게 볼 수도 있겠지만 실제 그러했는지는 알 수 없다. 오히려 다산이 영향받은 서학과 연관성을 통해 살펴보면 한국유학사의 연속성과는 단절되어 있으며, 오늘날 양명심학과 서구사상에서 나타나는 행위철학의 양상을 닮아있음을 알 수 있다. 반면 퇴계학은 마음공부를 중시하면서도 마음의 알맹이, 감정에 대한 이해에 충실하고자 하였고, 행위가 아닌 감정의 올바른 이해를 추구한 학문이라고 할 수 있겠다.

영문 초록

This article examines the continuity and limitations of Toegye and Dasan with questions about whether Dasan accepted Toegyehak and examines what was cut off. Dasan accepted Toegyehak through the book of ｢Dasan SaSookRok｣ and ｢argument of human experience in concrete existence and issuance of gi｣ that Dasan wrote in Toegye s letter at the age of 34, and it is not known whether it was actually the case that there was an influence of Toegye in the process of reconciliation with the Neo-Confucianism and furthermore, the 36-year-old declaration of apostasy. Rather, the connection between Dasan and the influenced calligraphy shows that the continuity of Korean Confucianism is disconnected, and it resembles the pattern of behavioral philosophy that appears in Yangmyeong’s ‘Learning of the mind’ and Western thought today. On the other hand, Toegyehak tried to be faithful to understanding the mind and emotion while emphasizing mind study, and it can be said that it is a study that pursued the right understanding of emotion rather than act.
