｢中庸｣과 ｢論語｣의 溫故知新에 대한 退溪의 해석과 그 특이점

국문 초록

본 논문에서 필자는 ‘退溪 李滉(1501~1570)이 󰡔中庸󰡕과 󰡔論語󰡕에 나오는 溫故知新의 의미를 다르게 해석했던 그 특이점을 연구하였다. 유학에서는 오직 때에 따라 變易하는 것을 일러 떳떳하고 恒常하는 道인 常道라 한다. 恒은 일정함을 말한 것이 아니기에, 일정하면 항상 하지 못한 것이 된다. 溫故와 知新도 끊임없이 순환하는 道이다. 溫故는 고유성의 자취이고 知新은 참신성의 좌표가 된다. 고유성을 반석삼아 참신성을 쌓으려는 시도는 곧 오랜 기간의 시행착오를 전제로 도전과 실패를 거듭하면서 축적하지 않고서는 얻을 수 없는 창조적 역량이다. 먼저 退溪는 󰡔中庸󰡕의 溫故知新은 德을 닦아 道를 이루고 마음을 보전함을 위주로 하였기 때문에 溫故에 중점을 두었다고 하였다. 󰡔中庸󰡕은 道를 전하는 책이므로 德을 쌓고 道를 닦아야 하는 所以然을 말한 것이다. 德을 쌓아 道에 나아간다는 것은 오늘날 무가치들의 가벼움이 중시되고 가치들의 가치가 경시되는 풍조에서 어떻게 가치들의 고유성을 찾고 그 진지함을 사유할 것인가를 숙고하게 한다. 退溪는 󰡔論語󰡕의 溫故知新은 스승의 자격을 논하여, 道를 아는 것을 위주로 하였기 때문에 知新에 중점을 두었다고 하였다. 이는 배움이란 전에 들은 것을 때로 익히고 새로 터득함이 있으면 배운 것이 나에게 있어서 그 응용됨이 끝이 없다는 뜻이다. 퇴계는 스승이 되려는 자는 演繹과 推論을 잘 해야 하며 인간다움을 강조하였다. 이는 󰡔論語󰡕는 핵심이 溫故라는 전통성보다는 知新이라는 창조성에 있음을 뜻한다. 退溪는 우리로 하여금 “당신은 미래에 대한 상상보다 과거에 대한 기억이 더 많은가?” 혹은 “미래에 대한 상상이 과거에 대한 기억보다 더 많은가?”를 스스로 자문하게 한다. ‘지혜의 영속성’을 지켜 ‘창조의 역동성’을 열어 가라는 것이 퇴계의 대답일 듯싶다. 이런 맥락에서 진정한 가치는 물려받은 것이 아니라 찾아지는 것이며, 답습되기보다는 창조되는 것이고, 수용된 것이라기보다는 전승된 것이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This Article researched the Singularity in which 退溪 李滉(1501-1570) differently interpreted the meaning of the phrase “Reanimating the Old can gain the knowledge of the New”(溫故知新) in The Doctrine of the Mean (中庸)and The Analects(論語) In Confucian the constant Way is only to change according to circumstances. Being long lasting does not mean being in a fixed and definite state. Being fixed and definite, a thing cannot last long. Reanimating the Old(溫故) and the knowledge of the New(知新) are also constantly circulating Way(dao, 道). The former is a vestige of its own nature and the latter is a coordinate of its true identity. An attempt to build a new identity by taking advantage of its inherent nature is a creative capacity that cannot be gained without accumulating while repeatedly challenging and failing on the premise of a long period of trial and error. First of all, Toegye said that the phrase “Reanimating the Old can gain the knowledge of the New(溫故知新)” in The Doctrine of the Mean(中庸) emphasizes ‘Reanimating the Old(溫故)’ because it focused on cultivating the Virtue(德), advancing the Way(道), and preserving the Mind&Heart(心). The Doctrine of the Mean(中庸) is a book that passes down the Way and it means “that by which something is so(suoyiran 所以然).” Cultivating the Virtue(德) and advancing the Way(道) make us ponder how to find the uniqueness of values and reason for their seriousness in the stream of the times where the lightness of trivial things is valued and the value of values is underestimated. Toegye said that “Reanimating the Old can gain the knowledge of the New”(溫故知新) in The Analects(論語) emphasizes the Knowledge of the New(知新) because it focused on knowing the Way(道) by discussing the qualifications as a teacher. This means that if scholars learn from time to time what you ve heard before, and endlessly apply it to something new. Toegye emphasized that those who want to become teachers should be good at Deductive and Inference, which means that the core is the creativity of 知新 rather than the traditionality of 溫故. Toegye asked us, “Do you have more Memories than Dreams?” or “Do you have more Dreams than Memories?” Toegye’s answer seems to keep the permanence of wisdom and open up the dynamism of creation. In this context, I suggest that the Value of values is found rather than inherited, created rather than imitated, and inherited rather than accepted.
