제주 수정사지 출토 청석탑의 제작지 검토

국문 초록

청석탑은 고려시대에만 나타나며, 재질, 구조, 조각 등에서 석탑들과 다른 새로운 형식의 탑이다. 고려시대 청석탑은 현재 북한과 문헌사료를 제외하고 18곳에서 확인된다. 청석탑은 고려시대에 전국적으로 분포 양상이 나타나며, 제주 수정사지에서도 확인됨에 따라 청석탑을 조성하는 재료로서의 가치는 청석이 산출되는 지질적 특징과 관련 있을 것으로 추정된다. 청석은 옥천변성대를 중심으로 발달한 지질층에서 확인되는데, 기존의 화강암에 비해 가공이 용이하고, 표면에 섬세하고 쉽게 조각할 수 있다. 화강암보다 경제적으로 적은 노력으로 조성 가능했을 것이며, 이러한 현상은 전국적으로 청석탑을 건립하는 데 용이했을 것으로 판단된다. 청석탑의 부재는 개별적으로 조성된 형태이므로 발굴조사를 통해 청석부재가 출토될 가능성이 높다. 따라서 경제적 이동의 용이함, 점판암이 가지고 있는 석재의 아름다움, 조각의 편리함 등으로 인해 새로 운 형식의 청석탑이 조성되었을 것으로 판단되며, 출토 위치를 보건대 대부분 강을 따라 조성되어 수운을 이용해서 이동했을 가능성이 매우 높다. 청석탑은 대부분 고려시대 초기에 조성된 것으로 지금까지 후기에 조성된 것은 확인되지 않았다. 그 요인으로는 사회·경제적 변동에 의한 수취량 감소와 조창민의 이탈 등 내부적 요인과 원 간섭에 따른 삼벌초의 발호와 왜구의 약탈 행위 등으로 인한 외부적 요인을 들 수 있다. 따라서 고려가 멸망할 때까지 해운 활동이 회복되지 못한 내·외부적인 요소로 인하여 운송체계가 붕괴되고, 이동에 용이한 해로 사용이 불가능했을 것이다.

영문 초록

The blue stone stupa is unique to the Goryeo Dynasty and is a new type of stupa distinguished from other stupas in terms material, structure, and carved expressions. The blue stone stupa is mentioned in 18 literatures except North Korean literatures. It was distributed across the country during the Goryeo Dynasty, including Sujeongsa temple site in Jeju, suggesting that the value as the material constituting the blue stone stupa is related with the geological characteristics of the blue stone producing center. The blue stone is found in the geologic layer which developed centering on Okcheon Metamorphic Belt, and it is easy to process compared with the granite and to carve delicate expressions on the surface. It is deemed that it must have been possible toconstruct a stupa with financially less effort than the granite and easy to construct the blue stone stupa across the country. Since the blue stone stupa is constructed with individually made subsidiary materials, the chances of excavating the blue stone during excavation surveys are high. In other words, new types of blue stone stupa could have been made due to easy transportation, the beauty of the clay-slate stone, and easiness in carving, and the chances that the stone was transported through the sea route are high as most of it was excavated along the river. The blue stone stupa was created in the early Goryeo Dynasty and not in the late Goryeo Dynasty. The main cause consists internal cause such as the reduction of revenues due to social and economic changes and the desertion of tribute granary workers and external cause such as the domination of Sambyeolcho (special capital defense unit) due to Won (China)’s interference and plunder by Japanese raiders. In other words, the transportation system collapsed due to internal and external causes alongside the shipping that was not recovered until the fall of Goryeo, and it was impossible to use the sea routes which would have facilitated transportation.
