국문 초록

칸트에 따르면 인간은 도덕적 완성을 통해 자신의 사명을 완수할 수 있으며, 도덕 교육의 목표는 바로 인간을 도덕적 완성을 향해 인도하는 것이다. 도덕 교육의 중요성과 필요성을 주장하는 칸트에 대해 두 가지 비판이 제기되곤 한다. 첫째는 도덕 교육에 대한 칸트 윤리학의 부정적 함축이 칸트의 도덕 교육에 대한 긍정적 주장과 충돌한다는 비판이고, 둘째는 도덕 교육의 가능성에 대한 일반적 문제제기인 ‘도덕 교육의 역설’이 칸트에게도 마찬가지로 적용될 수 있다는 비판이다. 이 논문의 목표는 바로 이 두 가지 비판에 대해 답하는 것이다. 이를 위해 우선 우리는 1절에서 도덕 교육에 대한 칸트의 일반적 입장을 정리하고 2절에서 칸트에 대한 두 가지 비판을 자세히 살펴볼 것이다. 두 가지 비판 중에서 3절은 첫째 비판을, 4절과 5절은 둘째 비판을 다룰 것이다. 먼저 3절은 덕의 경험적 성격과 예지적 성격에 대한 칸트의 구별을 자세히 검토한 뒤 칸트의 윤리학이 도덕 교육의 중요성과 필요성을 부정하지 않는다는 점을 해명할 것이다. 이어서 4절과 5절은 도덕 교육의 역설적 상황을 이미 칸트가 분명히 인지하고 있었음을 보이고 그 역설적 상황을 피하기 위해 칸트가 제안하는 도덕 교육의 방법이 무엇인지 검토할 것이다.

영문 초록

According to Kant humans can achieve their vocation through moral perfection, and the aim of moral education is no other than to lead humans to moral perfection. Now there are two criticisms against Kant’s claims on the importance and necessity of moral education. One is that Kant’s positive claims on moral education conflict with the negative implications of his ethics, and the other is that the so-called ‘paradox of moral education’ which generally calls into question the possibility of moral education can also apply to Kant’s conception of moral education. It is the very purpose of this paper to answer both criticisms. For this purpose, in Section 1 we will summarize Kant’s basic position on moral education, and in Section 2 we will identify two criticisms against Kant in detail. With regard to the first of these two criticisms, in Section 3 we will reconsider Kant’s distinction between two characters of virtue, i.e., its empirical and intelligible character, and then will elucidate that Kant’s ethical thought does not reject his positive claims on moral education. With regard to the second criticism, finally in Section 4 and 5 we will show that Kant had already recognized the possibility of paradoxical situation in moral education, and then will identify what is proposed by Kant in order to avoid such a paradoxical situation.
