국문 초록

아우구스티누스의 감각지각 이론에 대한 주의주의적 해석에서 오는 난점들, 특히 그 가운데 가장 심각한 “선택적 주의”의 무한후퇴 문제는 결국 intentio의 복합적인 개념을 해명하는 문제로 환원된다. 사랑과 의지를 동력으로 목적을 지향하는 인간 영혼의 운동을 가리키는 이 핵심용어는 영혼이 행하는 무의식적이고 자연적 차원의 생명작용과 의식적이고 의지적 차원의 감각작용 모두에서 결정적인 역할을 한다. 이 두 작용은 서로 긴밀하게 결합되어 있는데, 영혼은 uitalis intentio를 통해 언제나 활성화하고 있는 자기 육체를 자극하는 감각적 대상들을 향해 열려 있고, 이러한 개방성을 통해 육체 편에서 던져진 요청, 곧 감각적 겪음(passio corporis)에 대하여 그 육체에 대한 사랑 때문에 무지하게 남아 있지 못하며(non latet animam), 의지와 사랑으로 이끌린 의식적 intentio를 실행함으로써 지향된 인식 대상이 인식 주체 안에 형상(similitudo uel imago)으로 태어나고 그의 시선에 현전하게 되는 것이다. 이러한 방식으로 히포의 주교는 인식을 ‘주어진 대상’에 대한 주체 편에서의 ‘사랑의 응답’으로 제시되는데, 사랑이 영혼 안에 명시적인 대상 인식을 낳는 반면, 대상의 ‘앞선 주어짐’으로 구성되는 先지식 없이 그것을 향해 영혼으로부터 발출할 수가 없기 때문이다. 이러한 사랑의 인식론은 아우구스티누스가 제시하는 삼위일체적 인식 구조에서 그 근거를 발견하는데, 가시성과 아름다움(forma atque species) 안에서 자기를 개현하는 물질적 대상은 성자와 성령의 원천인 성부와 유사한 만큼, 성자에 해당하는 대상의 형상을 주체 안에 낳는 원리와 척도로 제시되며 그것을 위해 성령에 해당하는 사랑과 의지의 intentio를 자기를 향해 움직이는 목적인으로 제시되기 때문이다. 이렇게 선택적 주의의 무한후퇴는 주어진 대상에 대한 주체의 응답이라는 삼위일체적 사랑의 인식론 안에서 해결된다.

영문 초록

Among a variety of problems stemming from the voluntaristic reading of st. Augustine’s perception theory, that of an infinite regress of “selective attention”, which may be one of the most serious problems, can be reduced to the matter of clarifying the complex concept of intentio. The lemma that denotes the human soul’s movement stretching forward the end in virtue of love and will plays decisive roles both in the vital movement at an unconscious and natural level and in the sense-perception at a conscious and willing level. These two functions of the human soul are profoundly interconnected, in that the same soul, being opened up for the sensible objects that stimulate its body, always already besieging it, cannot remain totally ignorant (non latet animam) of the passio corporis as a request coming from it, precisely out of love for it and orients its intentio to the same request by the power of love and will in order that an intentional object may be born in the soul and be present to its gaze. In this way the Bishop of Hippo presents his concept of knowledge as a response of love from the subject’s part to the given object; while love generates an explicit objective knowledge in the subject, it cannot proceed from the soul without any prior knowledge of the object, that consists of its being given first to the very subject. Such an epistemology of love finds its ground in the trinitarian structure of st. Augustine, in that the object, which, pertaining to the Father, common source of the Son and the Holy Spirit, manifests itself in visibility and beauty (forma atque species), is presented as the principle and measure for generating in the subject the form of itself corresponding to the Son, moving to itself as the causa finalis the same subject’s love and will which is connected with the Holy Spirit. Thus the problem of the infinite regress of selective intentio can be resolved in such a trinitarian epistemology of love consisting of the subject’s successive willing response to the object’s preceding self-giving.
