Flipping the Class for Adult Learners of EFL Speaking: A Pilot Study

국문 초록

거꾸로 학습은 최근 들어 다양한 교과 영역에 적용되고 있다. 영어교육 분야에서도 그동안 거꾸로 학습의 이론적 배경과 현장 적용에 있어서의 문제점들에 대한 연구가 수행되어 왔는데, 대부분은 초중등학생의 읽기 능력에 초점을 둔나머지 여타 학습자 집단과 언어기술에 관한 연구는 부족한 편이다. 이 연구는 거꾸로 학습을 성인 학습자를 대상으로 한 말하기 수업에 적용하였을 때 전통적인 방식에 비해 더 효과적인지를 검증할 목적으로 수행되었다. 특히 학습자 개개인의 학습 관련 변인들을 조사하여, 학습 환경적 변인인 거꾸로 교실이 학습자 내적 변인과 어떻게 상호작용하는지 살펴보고자 했다. 열 두 명의 성인 한국어 모국어 화자들이 총 24차시 12주 동안의 연구수업에 참여하였다. 이들 중 여섯 명은 전통적인 방식으로 교실에서 면대면 강의를 수강하였고, 다른 여섯 명은 강의 자료는 수업 전에 시청한 다음 수업 시간은 주로 다른 동료 학생들과 강의 관련 활동이나 과업을 수행하는 거꾸로 교실에 배정되었다. 두 집단에서 유사한 학습자 변인을 가진 학생들의 사전평가, 직후평가, 사후지연평가 성적을 비교하였으며, 관찰일지를 통해 수업 중 행동에 있어서 두 집단이 서로 어떻게 다른지 조사하였다. 그 결과 학습자 변인과 큰 상관관계 없이 거꾸로 학습이 면대면 강의에 비해 더 효과적이었으며, 거꾸로 학습 집단의 경우 면대면 강의를 받은 학생들과는 달리 학습한 내용 연결 짓기, 응용/확장성 질문하기, 자기주도적으로 교실활동 제안하기 등과 같은 행동을 보인다는 사실을 발견하였다.

영문 초록

There is little empirical research concerning whether flipped learning can be a viable alternative to the traditional present-practice-produce class of EFL (English as a foreign language) oral/aural skills for adult learners. The present study addresses this gap by investigating the effects of flipped learning on adult learners’ improvement in EFL speaking. Twelve Korean native speakers participated in a language course comprised of 24 sessions for a three-month period (60-minute per session, 2 sessions per week); six of them were assigned to a control group where they received traditional offline lectures in the classroom while the other six participated in flipped learning. Learners with similar backgrounds and attitudinal profiles were chosen as a focus group and their achievements and classroom behaviors were compared. The results indicate that when compared in pairs of shared learner variables, students in the experimental group invariably outperformed their counterparts in the control group on both immediate and delayed post-tests. Students in the flipped classroom also demonstrated some characteristic behavioral features that were not observed in the control group, such as connecting prior and current discussions, formulating more elaborated and personalized questions, and exercising autonomy by proposing their own discussion topics.
