마르크스적 재생산이론의 맥락에서 듀이의 ‘민주주의와 교육’ 다시 읽기

국문 초록

본 연구는 학교의 재생산기능을 극복할 수 있는 진보적이고 민주적인 교육의 전망을 듀이의 <민주주의와 교육>에서 찾아볼 수 있다는 전제하에서 출발하였다. 그간 교육학계에서 듀이의 민주주의이론은 많은 연구의 대상이 되었지만, 자본주의경제체제 하의 위계적 노동분업에 대한 듀이의 관점은 그다지 주목을 받지 못하였다. 듀이의 민주주의이론에 대한 수많은 교육철학적 논의에서 민주주의와 노동분업의 관련성은 여전히 간과되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 보울즈(S. Bowles)와 긴티스(H. Gintis)의 마르크스적 재생산이론의 맥락에서 듀이의 대표적 저작인 <민주주의와 교육>의 의미를 재해석하고, <민주주의와 교육>이 재생산이론 한계를 넘어서서 민주주의 교육의 전망을 제시할 수 있는지를 탐색하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결과, 듀이의 <민주주의와 교육>은 그 근간이 교육의 재생산기능에 대한 비판이며, 따라서 보울즈와 긴티스의 마르크스적 재생산이론과 인식을 같이 하는 면들이 있다. 예를 들어 자본주의경제체제하의 노동의 성격과 위계적 노동분업구조, 그리고 노동분업과 교육과의 관계에 대해서 인식이 비슷하다. 마르크스적 재생산이론과 같이 교육을 자본주의적 사회경제구조와 관련하여 심층적으로 분석한 것은 아니지만, 듀이는 위계적 노동분업의 구조를 비판하는 데 있어 그의 민주주의 원리를 일관되게 적용함으로써, 어떻게 위계적 노동분업구조가 변화되어야 하는지를 적극적으로 피력한다는 점에서 이들과는 다르다. 또한, 교육에도 민주주의 원리를 적용함으로써 교육이 어떻게 변화되어야 하는지를 노동분업구조의 민주적 변화에 상응하여 제시한다는 점에서 독특하다.

영문 초록

This study was performed on the basis of the assumption that in Dewey s work ‘Democracy and Education’, we would find progressive and democratic prospect of education that could overcome the reproductive function of the school. Dewey’s view on the hierarchical division of labor under capitalist economic system has not so received attention as democratic theory of Dewey was the topic of many educational studies. Numerous educational and philosophical discussion on the theory of democracy for Dewey has overlooked the relevance of democracy and the division of labor. The purpose of this study was to interpret the meaning of Dewey’s representative work, ‘Democracy and Education’ in the context of Marx s theory of reproduction of S. Bowles and H. Gintis and to explore whether it could present the prospect of the democratic education beyond the limit of Marx’s theory of reproduction. This study shows that Dewey’s criticism in ‘Democracy and Education’ was directed toward the reproductive function of education in the capitalist society. Dewey had similar views with S. Bowles and H. Gintis with respect to the nature of labor and the hierarchical structure of the division of labor, and its relations with education of the capitalist economic system. Dewey did not so performed an in-depth analysis of economic structure of capitalist society with regard to education as Bowles and Gintis did. However, Dewey was different from them in that Dewey actively expressed how the structure of the hierarchical division of labor should be changed by applying his democratic principles. In addition, Dewey is unique in that he presented how education should be changed corresponding to the democratic changes in the structure of the division of labor.
