영문 초록

As the follow-up research on the 'Geroge Peabody College for Teachers Operation Mission( Ⅰ)' (published in 1999), this study explores the various activities of Mission and it's influence on art education in Korea. 'The creative art education method' implanted by Peabody Mission in the late 1950s has played a leading role in Korean art education for the past 40 years. Especially significant, the activities of Mr. Don Sudlow who gave a representative class in art and craft, brought a turing point in Korean art education. In spite of its distinctive contribution, no previous research has touched on the activities of Peabody Mission, inter alia, cases of art education and its influence on art education in Korea, partly because of the lack of historical records and disregard of the researchers. Based on the original historical materials on Peabody Mission, which have been collected since 1997, this study explores and investigates the following three themes. 1. the art education activities of Peabody Mission 2. the cases of art education activities of Don Sudlow 3. the impacts of Peabody Mission on art education in Korea As a result, this study makes clear the activities of Peabody Mission focusing on art education, the contribution of Mr. Don Sudlow on art education, and the Mission's influence on art and craft education in Korea. In these respects, this study has an unique significance. Especially significant, this is the first study that explores the critical issue in a certain period(1956. 10~1962. 8), which was an inception of research on art education in Korea. This study also has a significance of facilitating conducting further research on this area for the development and systematic implementation of art education in Korea.
