다문화가정 자녀의 학업수행에 관한 문화기술적 연구

국문 초록

국제결혼의 증가, 외국인 근로자의 지속적인 유입으로 한국사회는 전통적 단일민족사회가 아닌 다문화사회로 빠르게 진입하고 있다. 본 연구는 원활한 다문화 사회로의 진입에 중요한 의미를 지 니고 있는 다문화가정 자녀들의 학업수행 실태에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위한 주요 연구방법 으로 참여관찰과 심층면담을 주로 사용하는 질적 조사방법을 사용하였다. 연구대상으로 서울의 1개 초등학교, 인천의 1개 초등학교, 전북 지역의 2개 초등학교가 선정되었다. 추가로 방과 후 프로그램 을 운영하는 외국인근로자 지원센터를 방문하여 연구 자료를 수집하였다. 교실 생활을 참관하고 교 사와 학부모 면담을 통해서 다문화가정 학생들의 수업 참여 과정, 교실생활 모습, 부모의 지원 등 학교 적응 및 학업 수행 과정을 파악하려 하였다. 본 연구는 다문화가정 자녀의 학업수행과정에 대 한 단순 일반화를 지양하고 다양한 적응 모습을 제시하고자 하였다. 다문화가정 자녀들은 한국에서 의 체류 연한, 교과목 종류, 부모의 지원 정도, 지역사회와 학교의 지원 프로그램 유무와 참여 정도 에 따라 학업 수행의 다양한 모습을 보이고 있다. 결론에서는 이러한 이해를 기반으로 다각적 차원 에서 다문화가정 자녀 학업 수행 지원이 이루어져야 할 것임을 제안하고 있다.

영문 초록

Korean Society rapidly goes toward multicultural society as international marriage and migrant workers continuously increase. This study attempts to look closely at the academic performance of children of international migrants, who play significant roles in smooth transition toward multicultural society. For this, we adopted qualitative methods including participant observation and in-depth interview. We collected data from one elementary school in Seoul, one in Incheon, and two in North Cholla Province. In addition, we visited and collected data from a center for foreign migrant workers. We tried to figure out children of migrants' school adjustment and academic performance such as class participation, everyday classroom life and support of parents. This study intended to avoid simple generalization and shed lights on the variety of their adjustments. Children of migrants show various performance depending on the length of stay in Korea, academic subject matters, parents' supports, existence of supporting program of school and neighborhood and their participation in those programs. In conclusion, we suggest that the support for the children of migrants' academic performance should be executed at multiple dimension, based on such understanding.
