한국인 어머니들이 말하는 미국의 유아교육: 유아기 자녀를 미국 유아교육기관에 보낸 어머니 경험을 중심으로

국문 초록

연구목적: 본 연구는 한국인 어머니들의 미국 유아교육 경험을 묻고 그들이 말하는 미국의 유아교육을 밝혀보고자 하는 목적으로 출발하였다. 연구방법: 이를 위해 그들이 말하는‘이야기된 이야기(told stories)’를 들여다보고 분석하고 이해하기 위한 방법으로 내러티브 탐구방법을 선택하고, 한국인 어머니 5명을 연구참여자로 하여 내러티브를 진행하였다. 연구결과: 연구참여 어머니들은 미국 유아교육에 대한 이야기를 하다가 자기의 경험했거나 알고 있던 한국 유아교육에 대한 기억과 끊임없이 비교하는 과정을 거쳤다. 그 속에서 미국 유아교육의 장단점을 찾기도 하고, 한국 유아교육의 좋은 점이나 아쉬운 점을 이야기하고 있었다. 첫째, 바깥활동이 적은 한국에 비해 미국 유아교육기관은 바깥활동이 일상화되어 있다. 둘째, 미국 유아교육과정에는 재밌고 신나는 행사가 많고 개별 아동의 욕구를 잘 반영하고 있다. 셋째, 미국 유아교사도 개인차는 있지만 편안하게 소통이 잘 되는 편이다. 넷째, 미국 유아교육기관에는 다양한 역할을 가진 여러 명의 교사가 아이돌봄을 지원하고 있다. 다섯째, 한국 급식과 비교할 때 미국 학교 급식은 메뉴나 운영시간 등에서 아쉬운 점이 많다. 여섯째, 한국에서는 부모참여도가 낮지만 미국에서는 자발적 부모참여를 유도하고 있다. 일곱째, 미국 유아교육기관에서는 학대나 폭력 등의 사건사고에 대한 체계적인 안전 시스템을 가지고있어 안심이 된다. 결론 및 논의: 미국에서 유아교육기관을 경험한 한국인 어머니들이 바깥놀이 시간이 충분하고, 개별화된 교육과정은 운영하고, 다양한 행사를 진행하며, 부모참여의 기회가 많다는 점 등에 만족하고 있다는 점은 한국 유아교육에 접목해볼만 하다고 본다.

영문 초록

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of Korean mothers in early childhood education in America. Method: To do this, we selected the narrative inquiry method as a way to look into, analyze, and understand the told stories that they talked about, and conducted the narrative with five Korean mothers as research participants. Results: First, outdoor play activities are commonplace in American kindergarten. Second, the American early childhood curriculum has many interesting and exciting events and reflects the needs of individual children. Third, even though there are individual differences among teachers, parents are easy to communicate with them. Fourth, many preschools in the United States are supported by various teachers with various roles. Fifth, in comparison to Korean food service, American school food service has many problems in menus and operating hours. Sixth, American kindergarten encourages voluntary parent participation. Seventh, parents are satisfied with systematic safety systems. Conclusion: The fact that Korean mothers who have experienced early childhood educational institutions in the United States are satisfied with enough outdoor playtime, individualized curriculum, various event management, and voluntary parent participation is a good match for Korean early childhood education.
