국문 초록

고려시대의 銅鏡은 다양한 문양과 형태로 다량 출토되어, 고려시대 전후의 동경과는 뚜렷하게 구분되는 양상을 보인다. 이러한 양상은 고려에 銅이 풍부하게 생산되던 배경과, 대량생산이 가능한 동경의 제작방식, 중국 舶載鏡, 再鑄鏡, 倣製鏡의 다량 유통, 일용품을 부장하던 고려시대의 부장풍습 등이 복합적으로 작용한 결과로 여겨진다. 고려 龍樹殿閣文鏡은 이러한 배경 속에 고려에서 제작된 것으로 여겨지는 대표적인 동경이다. 하지만 제작지를 명확하게 규명하기 어려운 동경의 특성과, 중국의 동경 중 도상 및 구도에서 비교·대조의 근거가 되는 동경이 있어, 용수전각문경이 고려의 독자적인 동경으로 언급되는 데에 이견이 제기되기도 하였다. 본 논고에서는 용수전각문경의 도상과 양식을 분석하여 고려에서 제작된 대표적인 동경으로서의 면모와 내포하고 있는 의의를 살펴보았다. 용수전각문경 도상의 연원은 중국 月宮故事文鏡에서 찾아볼 수 있지만, 용수전각문경에 등장하는 도상이 모두 다르게 표현되고 있고, 용과 화염보주, 토끼 뒤의 화염문양과 두꺼비, 구름 등 새로운 도상을 삽입하여 고려시대에 성행하던 도교와 불교를 조화롭게 담아내고자 하였음을 밝혔다. 또한 중국의 월궁신화를 배경으로 하고 있는 月宮鏡부터 月宮故事文鏡에 이르는 양식의 성립과 이와 구분되는 용수전각문경 양식의 성립을 정리하였다. 이를 통하여 용수전각문경이 고려에서 새롭게 제작된 동경으로서의 실질적인 가능성을 높이고, 동시에 고려에서 애호된 동경이었음을 증명하였다. 중국 동경의 영향이 지배적인 가운데, 용수전각문경과 같이 고려의 사상을 담은 세밀하고 우수한 동경이 주조되었다는 것은 고려시대 동경에 대한 새로운 해석을 제시해주며, 나아가 번안이 이루어질 정도로 애호되었다는 것은 중요한 의의와 가치를 지닌다.

영문 초록

Many Bronze mirrors were cast in a large variety of shapes, sizes, and designs in the Goryeo dynasty. It is considered that this phenomenon occurred due to the abundant copper production, the mass production system of bronze mirrors, the influence of Chinese bronze mirrors, and the custom of burying personal belongings with the deceased during this period. The bronze mirror with Dragon, Tree, and Palace designs is regarded as a representative Goryeo bronze mirror. However, there have been different views about the origin of this bronze mirror because Chinese bronze mirrors with similar designs and characteristics of production system make it hard to clarify its origin. This study analyzed the bronze mirror with Dragon, Tree, and Palace designs to prove its representative characteristics as a mirror which was designed and cast in Goryeo. The origin of the motif on this bronze mirror was influenced by Chinese mirrors which are related to the Lunar Palace myth and Taoism. However, the types and expressions of the Goryeo motif are certainly different from Chinese ones. All motifs are expressed in different ways and important motifs such as a dragon, a toad, clouds, a flame-shaped mani and an expression of flame behind a rabbit appeared in this bronze mirror for the first time. This difference suggests that this bronze mirror tried to imply Buddhism and Taoism which were prevalent in the period. This study also dealt with its stylistic development from the Chinese mirrors and its own stylistic features. The bronze mirror with Dragon, Tree, and Palace designs implied Goryeo taste and thought with fine metalwork in the distinguished way of the Goryeo dynasty, and this is significant as it was the period which foreign influences were prevalent. Furthermore, there was another type that imitated this bronze mirror which shows its popularity and makes this bronze mirror that much more important and meaningful.
