영문 초록

Drugs used in the geriatric psychiatry unequivocally able to delay or arrest the deterioration of neurons in the brain and the^associated deterioration of intellectual functions are not available at present. We do, however, have drugs which are valuablly developed in the treatment of psychiatric symptoms secondary to intectual deterioration and psychiatric symptoms of senescene which do not seem to be directly related to the anatomical process of senescene. Clinically, many aged psychiatric patients suffer from somatic illness, either already diagnosed or, worse, as yet unrecognized. The most common conditions in the aged are cardiac decompensation, respiratory infection, diabetes, liver cirrhosis, carcinoma, malnutrition and peripheral neuritis. In the presence of such conditions, prescription of psychotropic drugs may be more hazaradous. Paradoxical effects are more frequently observed in the aged than in younger patients. In view of these factors, more side effects of psychotropic drugs can be expected with increasing age. For these reasons it is of importance to observe and to dealing with aged patients. The initial dose should be small and increased gradually on the basis of the ratio betwean therapeutic and side effects. And then, the minimum effective dose to the suboptimal dose should be established, and regular efforts with psychotherapeutic consideration may be made to establish in the treatment of elderly psychiatric patient.
