영문 초록

During physical examination for conscription in Kang-won do area from June 4 to August 17, 1978, seven hundred and eighty-one had tattoos among the 13,963 conscripts. They were studied for their psychosocial status and the following results were obtained. 1. The prevalence of tattooing was 5. 6 per cent. 2. Among the various contents of tattoos, a heart or heart and arrow, one mind , a butterfly, a rose and a knife were the most frequently seen. 3) The average age when the first tattoo was made was 17.2 years. 4) Tattoo was made mostly in a group setting with a strong motivation to follow a contemporary group fad. 5) As to the site of tattoo, both arms, especially forearms were the favorite. 6) The lower educational and socio-economic level, the more frequency of tattoo was observed. 7) The self-injury was accompanied by one third of the tattooed and the frequency of the criminals was 18.6 per cent among the tatooed. 8) Parental loss of the tattooed men was more than the control group. 9) The tattooed men had a significantly higher scores on the psychopathic deviate and the schizophrenic scales on MMPI, suggesting that they were more impulsive and hostile. In fact, delinquent behavior was frequently seen in them than control group. The being tattooed seemed to be related to personality factors rather than overt mental illness.
