영문 초록

The prevalence of psychiatric morbidity in 260 inpatients at the adult medical and surgical ward of Pusan National University Hospital was surveyed. The attitudes of physicians concerning the psychiatric consultation of 64 inpatients who posessed relatively grave psychiatric disorders were also evaluated. The data revealed that a great number of physicians (31.3% ) did not recognize the symptdms of psychiatric complications their patients displayed. The majority of physicians (57.8% } who did recognize the problem did not feel the psychiatric consultation was necessary. Only a small number of physicians (10.9% ) felt the need for a psychiatric consultation to enhance the therapy of their patients. However, even in these cases, varrous obstacles such as fear of losing patient during referral, made them hesitant to seek the consultation. Based on the data, the following suggestions are made to enhance the psychiatric awareness: 1) Provide more active psychiatric education to the students in medical colleges. 2) Extend opportunities for general physicians to obtain knowledges needed for psychiatric evaluation and treatment of their patients. 3) Educate the general public of the functions and roles of psychiatry as a valid and normal medical specialty to decrease the social fear to seeking the advices of psychiatrist 4) Organization and professionalization of psychiatrists involved in consultation - liaison activity. 5) Further increase in teaching aspect of consultation- liaison activity instead of research and clinical activity, 6) Emphasize the consultee - oriented consultation rather than the patient 一 oriented consultation. This is more beneficial to the patient s total well being.
