국문 초록

본 논문은 해방 이후 최초로 채록된 안동본을 여타의 지역본과 비교하여 그 특징을 살피고, 그 원인을 무속과 불교와의 관계에서 해명했다. 먼저 바리데기가 버려지고 부모가 병에 걸리는 장면을 다른 지역본과 비교하면, 안동본은 가부장제나 남아선호사상에 대한 반성이 뚜렷하게 드러나지 않는다. 그 대신 부모가 병든 상황에서 여덟 딸과 바리데기의 행동 대비를 통해 ‘효’를 강조한다. 다음으로 안동본에 불교가 스며드는 양상을 고찰했다. 안동은 제비원 미륵불로 표현되는 불교적 전통과 성주신앙 및 바위신앙으로 표현되는 무속적 전통이 모두 융성했던 지역으로 보인다. 그러나 안동본에는 한 종교의 절대적 우세나, 혹은 두 종교의 대립이 발견되지 않는다. 그 대신 이 둘을 조화하여 겉으로는 바리데기가 망자를 시왕세계로 천도하는 불교적 신이 되지만, 그 이면에는 자매간의 갈등을 통해 효를 환기하는 이야기로 구성됨이 확인된다.

영문 초록

This paper examined the characteristics of the Andong version of Princess Bari, the first recorded version after the liberation of Korea, comparing it with versions from other regions and elucidating its source in relation to shamanism and Buddhism. First, through comparing the scene in which Princess Bari is abandoned and her parents afflicted with illness with that depicted in versions of other regions, this paper found that reflection on the patriarchy and the preference of sons over daughters in the Andong region was unclear. Instead, it found that the Andong version focuses on highlighting the “filial piety” of the other eight daughters in contrast with the youngest daughter, when faced with the illness of their parents. Next, this paper studied the features of the influence of Buddhism in the Andong version. Andong is a region where the Buddhist tradition, in the form of the Jaebiwon Maitreya, and shamanist traditions, manifested in the form of the Sungju faith and rock faith, both flourish. However, in the Andong version, there is neither assertion of the superiority of one religion over the other, nor a conflict between the two religions. Instead, the Andong version unites the two religions. On the surface, Baridegi appears to be a Buddhist god who transfers the dead to the realm of the ten kings, but on the other hand, the Andong version is also a tale of the rousing of filial piety through conflict between sisters.
