영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate time aesthetics through Yoknapatawpha County in William Faulkner's novels. The theme of time has been a main topic in literature and philosophy for a long time. In the early twentieth century Henri Bergson, French philosopher opened a new vista concerning time. In his major works, he said the nature of time is duration, and he tried to find the duration in human consciousness. Bergson's time theory had a great influence on many novelists and poets, Among them William Faulkner stated that he was influenced by Bergson's theory of fluidity of time. This study has proceeded on the assumption that in Faulkner's novels in which Bergson's theories of time such as duration, fluidity of time and intuition are employed, the present moment includes both the past and the future and the place of Yoknapatawpha County plays a great role in creating spatialized time. Bergson's theory of intuition can be experienced by Faulkner's characters through the space of Yoknapatawpha County, Faulkner's characters recognize the retrospective and the prospective sense of time and see reality in that moment through the specific landscape. In conclusion Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County serves as a spatialized time as well as his epitome of literary world. Through this place Faulkner can embody his sense of time and history completely. With it Faulkner achieves a more effective presentation of his vision into the past, the present and the future and attains a kind of aesthetic effect.

Abstract
