English Language and Linguistics 15, 45-79. the purpose of this paper is to review and critique Jespersen's How to Teach a Forelgn Language in terms of its content, role and place in the field of language teaching. Jespersen is a well known scholar for his contributions and endeavors in the field of English Linguistics. He has authored numerous works such as A Modem English Grammar on Historical Principles, Essentials of English Grammar. The Philosophy of Grammar. Language, its Nature, Development and Origin among others. This paper attempts to present Jespersen as not only a world-famous scholar but also a very conscious insightful language teacher by reviewing his work How to Teach a Foreign Language. Namely, he appears to be one of the most innuential advocates of the New(Natural) Method, which emphasized communicative competence.
