예이츠와 엘리엇의 늙음에 대한 시각

국문 초록

두 시인의 시를 하나의 관점에서 비교해 보는 것은 흥미로운 일이다. 이 논문에서는 현대영미시의 한 이정표인 두 시인의 시를 늙음이라는 토픽을 중심으로 비교해 보았다. 이 늙음은 두 시인의 시에서 다르게 표현되고 있는데 우리는 좀 더 감성적인 노인을 예이츠의 시에서, 이성적인 노인을 엘리엇의 시에서 보게 된다. 예이츠의 늙음은 그가 삶의 과정에서 경험한 것이며 그의 노인들은 끊임없이 지혜를 추구하고 있다. 반면에 엘리엇의 노인은 젊은 엘리엇의 상상의 산물이며 퇴락한 문명에 대한 상징이다. 즉 우리는 예이츠의 노인에서 감성적인 지혜를 엘리엇의 노인에서는 절망을 읽게 된다. 그리고 중요한 것은 이 두 시인이 젊어서부터 애늙은이였다는 것이다. 그것은 그들이 살던 시대의 어두웠던 분위기에서 영향 받은 것이다. 그 암울한 분위기 속에서 그들의 위대한 시는 탄생했으며 거기서 늙음의 이미지는 중요하다.

영문 초록

It is very interesting to compare the two poets’ point of view of the old age. This paper tried to compare the view of old age held by W. B. Yeats and T. S. Eliot, two great landmarks in modern British and American poetry. The problem of becoming old is expressed differently in their poems: in Yeats’s poems the old man is more emotional while the old man in Eliot’s is more reasonable. Yeats’s old men experiencing oldness in their life process search for wisdom endlessly, while Eliot’s oldness is only an imaginative work of a young poet, symbolizing degraded civilization. We find the emotional wisdom in Yeats’s old men, but dark desperation in Eliot’s. Eliot’s view is darker than Yeats’s in this respect. We can say that these two poets were the old men even when they were still young. That they lived in desperate civilization may have forced them to write such great poetry of old age, the image of their time.
