예이츠의 『비잔티움 항행』(“Sailing to Byzantium”)의 성서적 울림

국문 초록

예이츠의 「비잔티움 항행」(“Sailing to Byzantium”) 속에는 성서적인 영향력이 있다. 이 시의 화자는 육체와 영혼이 완벽한 상태인 비잔티움으로 떠난다. 성서도 인간 영혼의 완성에 도달하기 위해서 육체의 원동력을 강조한다. 예이츠는 물질적 영역과의 교제를 원하면서 영혼의 새로운 형태를 갈망한다. 이 새로운 형태는 성서의 죽음이후의 몸의 부활과 상응한다. 예이츠는 인간의 정화를 위해 불의 이미지, 또 옷의 비유의 이미지를 사용하는데 이것들은 성서 속에도 나오는 이미지들이다. 본 논문은 이러한 요소들을 논의한다.

영문 초록

In Yeats’s “Sailing to Byzantium” there is Biblical echo. The speaker in the poem sails to Byzantium where body and soul are in a perfect condition. The Bible stresses the generative power of body to reach the perfection of human soul. Yeats seeks a new form of soul while he desires to connect with a physical realm. The new form is analogous to the resurrection of body after death in the Bible. Yeats uses in the poem both the image of fire for human purification and the image of clothes, as in the Bible.
