국문 초록

셰이머스 히니가 그의 산문에서 밝히듯이 그의 시작(詩作)에 있어서 가장 큰 벽은 W. B 예이츠라는 아일랜드 시인이었다. 대부분의 시인이 그러하듯이 히니가 그의 창작을 시작할 무렵에도 아일랜드는 예이츠라는 작가에 의해서 표현, 대변되었다. 예이츠는 아일랜드의 신화, 전설, 정치, 자연경관 등의 소재를 망라하여 작품 활동을 하였고 거장 시인으로 인정되었다. 정치적, 종교적 배경은 예이츠와 달랐지만 아일랜드를 인식하고 표현하는 데 있어서 히니가 시인으로서 가지는 부담은 심상한 것이 아니었다. 그러나 히니는 북아일랜드를 소재로 하는 그의 작품에서 예이츠의 시적 과정과 표현 방식에서 이탈하려고 하였고, 그것은 북아일랜드의 대지에 그의 시선을 집중하는 것이었다. 과연 그의 작품은 초기 시에서부터 북아일랜드의 데리 농장의 유년기 체험을 소재로 하였다. 정치적인 소재를 표현하는 데 있어서도 히니는 예이츠의 보수적인 성향에서 벗어나 북아일랜드의 정치적 상황을 북아일랜드의 시골정경과 혼효시켜서 낮은 어조로 아우르는 자세로 접근하였고 이는 대부분이 자신의 독자적인 시 세계를 구축하는 결과를 낳았다.

영문 초록

This paper seeks to find how Seamus Heaney attempted to establish his own poetic world different from that of W. B. Yeats, who was a great poet in the world. Since Yeats was an Anglo-Irish and Protestant, Heaney, a Northern Ireland Catholic, might have seemed to find it easy to build his own poetic world in a different relation to Ireland and the Irish. But Yeats was still a large and high wall for a starting poet to cross over. But Heaney chose to place his primary thrust on his own soil — Northern Ireland farm life, which contrasts with Yeats, who preferred Irish legends, myths, and aristocratic, conservative ways of life, and “spiritualism.” As a result, his expression of Ireland and Irishness has become another uncommon voice in Irish literature after W. B. Yeats.
