Yeats’s A Vision as a Map of Modernism

국문 초록

모더니즘은 거대한 끈적거리는 생물체와 같거나, 아니면 생태계의 하나의 움직임 같아서, 혹은 생존을 위해 투쟁하는 다양한 주의들 속의 변덕스러운 피막 같아서, 각 이즘은 과거의 이즘(피터 비어랙의 우스운 조어인데)이 되는 것을 피하려고 한다. 미래파, 입체파, 추상, 신조형주의, 모두 허둥대면 서로를 잡아먹으려고 하는데, 이들 중 하나는 서로 경합하는 이즘의 한 부분이나 일부를 삼키는데 성공하여 소화시켜 자신의 몸의 일부를 형성한다. 내 생각에는 예이츠의 『환상록』(본인은 의도하지 않았지만) 조직적인 약도 혹은 천체도가 되어서, 모더니즘의 여러 요소들을 통합하여 하나의 디자인을 만든다.

영문 초록

Modernism can be understood as a huge blobby creature, more like an ecosystem than like a movement—a capacious membrane inside which various subordinate isms struggle for survival, each engaged in a desperate attempt to avoid becoming (as Peter Viereck joked) a wasm. Futurism, Cubism, Abstractionism, Neo-Plasticism all jostle there and try to eat each other up—one of them will often succeed in swallowing an appendage or two of some competing ism and incorporating the digested member into its own body. I believe that Yeats’s A Vision offers (though Yeats did not intend this) an organized schema or star-chart, fitting together the component isms of Modernism into a single design.
