국문 초록

일부 비평가들은 『배우 여왕』이 예이츠의 『환상록』의 내용을 알레고리로 극화시킨 희곡으로 무대 상연의 가치가 없다고 평가했다. 이 글은 그러한 비평가들의 해석에 반박하여 『배우 여왕』은 『환상록』을 몰라도 충분히 즐길 수 있는, 예이츠가 의도한대로 소극으로서 독자적인 가치를 지니고 있는 희곡이라는 주장을 하기 위해 비평가들의 해석을 검토한다.

영문 초록

Critics tend to read The Player Queen as an extension of Yeats’s collection of the automatic writings, A Vision, and interprets the play allegorically. Besides, the early critics conclude that this play is not stage-worthy. This paper refutes such allegorical interpretations, arguing that we can enjoy the play as a farce, even without referring to A Vision.
