국문 초록

이 논문은 먼저 연금술의 과정이 의미하는 것을 살펴보고 그것의 상징적인 의미 그리고 그 과정이 예이츠가 시나 시집에 수록된 시들의 순서를 정하는데어떻게 도움을 주었나를 연구한다. 연금술 과정이란 다름 아닌 납을 금으로 만드는 과정이다. 예이츠는 이 과정을 그의 시뿐만 아니라 그의 시집에도 이용하고 있다. 시와시집 공히 알케미컬 내러티브의 형식을 취하고 있는데 이는 시와 시집이 혼돈의 상태에서 시작하여 정제된 상태로 끝을 맺거나 아니면 최소한도 도입부에 암시된 거친 상태를 순화시킬수 있는 가능성을 제시하면서 마치기 때문이다. 나의 논지는 납에서 금으로의 변화는 예이츠가 자신의 인생뿐만 아니라 그의 조국이 필요로 하는 과정이라는 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper first examines the meaning of an alchemical process and its symbolic implications, and then talks about how the process informs us of the various ways Yeats arranges the order of poems in his book. An alchemical process is none other than a series of steps to transform lead into gold. We see that Yeats imitates this process when organizing not only his poems but also his book of poems, both of which encapsulate the alchemical narrative, starting with chaos (the lead state) and ending with refinement (the gold state) or at least the possibility of purifying the coarse state suggested in the beginning. My basic argument is that the transformation from lead to gold is a symbolic process Yeats needs not only for his life but also for his country.
