국문 초록

달의 17상의 예이츠와 6상의 휘트먼은 거대한 바퀴에서 서로 대립하는 인물상이다. 그들의 성격은 헤라클레스와 그리스도, 헬레니즘과 기독교 문명처럼 대립하였지만, 그들의 작품은 공통된 분야를 보인다. 예이츠는 수십 년 동안 편지나 수필, 그리고기사 등에서 휘트먼에 대한 지속적인 관심을 보였고, 이를 민족주의에 대한 통찰력으로발전시켰다. 특히 『비전』에서 예이츠는 휘트먼의 민주주의적 태도와 인류에 대한 무한한사랑에 찬사를 보였다. 그는 휘트먼의 반 문명화된 인간의 이미지를 창출하였고, 그의참 마스크인 그리스도를 본받으려는 휘트먼의 갈망을 그대로 소개하였다. 두 시인은 성향의 차이점에도 불구하고, 영국의 식민지 정신에 맞서 고유의 문학을 개발하여, 국가와민족정신을 고취하려던 예언자적 시인이란 공통점에서 의의를 지닌다.

영문 초록

Yeats in Phase 17 and Whitman in Phase 6 of the moon are antithetical in ‘The Great Wheel.’ Their personalities are in conflict like Heracles and Christ, Hellenism and Christianity. Despite these differences, however, their common areas can be found in their works. For decades, Yeats has constantly been interested in the letters, essays, and articles, which are related to Whitman’s life. In A Vision, Yeats shows us Whitman’s democratic attitudes and infinite love for the human. He creates Whitman’s semi-civilized personal image, to show Whitman’s desire to reach the goal of imitating his true mask, Christ. The two prophetic poets endeavor to develop their own works and inspire the national spirit against the British colonial spirit.
