국문 초록

이 논문에서는 셰이머스 히니의 『전원 답사』와 『스테이션 아일랜드』에 단테의 영향이 어떻게 드러나 있는지 살펴본다. 단테와 히니는 자신의 고향 피렌체와 북아일랜드에서 정치적인 문제로 (자기)추방되는 경험을 공유하고, 이로 인해 자신의 공동체와 자신에 대해 거리를 두고 성찰해보는 기회를 얻었다. 공동체로부터 소외되어 그들은 자기 탐구와 자기완성에 도달하려는 내적 여행 혹은 순례를 떠난다. 히니가 당면한 문제는 종족적 대립으로 희생된 이들에 대한 죄의식과 책임감에서 벗어나 시인으로서 자유로운 목소리를 찾아야 한다는 것이다. 『신곡』에서의 단테처럼 히니도 과거의 지인들이나 문학가들과 만나서 다채롭게 반응하는 상호 과정을 거치면서 자신의 문제를 대면할 수 있었고 개인의 자유와 서정시에 대한 신뢰를 얻고 세상으로 돌아올 수 있게 된다.

영문 초록

This paper examines how Seamus Heaney in Field Work and Station Island is indebted to Dante. Both of them share the experience of (self-)exile from their hometown, Florence and Northern Ireland respectively, for political reasons, which gave the chance to reflect on their own societies and their own selves in the distance. Alienated from their countries and people, they began to make inner journeys or pilgrimages to find answers for their own problems. On the part of Heaney his problem is how to get out of an obsession with the guilt for the victims of the Troubles in Northern Ireland in order to find his own freedom and voice as an independent poet. Heaney, like Dante, encounters and responds to the dead he has known or read about in the past. Heaney has the courage to confront himself and finally comes to give himself credit for his freedom and lyrical voice, with which he could come back to the world.
