‘공동체적 자유주의’에 기초한 도덕·윤리교육의 패러다임 재고찰

국문 초록

개인의 자유와 권리를 강조하는 자유주의와 개인적 삶의 기반으로서의 공동체를 강조하는 공동체주의 간의 논쟁은 해묵은 논쟁거리였다. 자유주의에서의 도덕성은 도덕적 문제에 대한 판단능력이므로 개인은 각자 이성을 발달시켜 최고의 단계인 보편적인 정의의 윤리를 가질 것을 요구하는 반면에, 공동체주의 도덕교육에서는 특정 공동체의 특성을 인정하고 개인은 그 공동체와 상호의존적 존재임을 인정하여 학교는 그 사회의 인습과 전통을 학생들에게 내면화시켜서 공동체에 대한 헌신과 미덕을 표현할 수 있게 하도록 하기 위해 자발적인 참여의 기회를 제공해 주는 것이 중요하다고 본다. 자유주의와 공동체주의의 관점은 모두 우리의 도덕·윤리교육에 각각의 유효성과 한계성도 있어 하나의 도덕·윤리교육 방법만을 고수하기에는 무리가 있어 보인다. 따라서 어떻게 하며 두 도덕교육을 적절하게 통합하여 성질이 다른 두 도덕교육의 장점을 살리고 도덕교육의 효과를 높일지를 모색할 필요가 있다. 이런 점에서 양자를 조화, 통합하는 공동체적 자유주의가 제시되고 있다.

영문 초록

The debate between liberalism which emphasizes individual freedom and rights, and communitarianism which emphasizes community as the basis of personal life, has been an old-aged one. In liberalism, morality is the ability to judge moral problems, so individuals need to develop their own reason and have the highest level of ethics of universal justice. On the other hand, in communitarian moral education, it is important to recognize the characteristics of a particular community and recognize that individuals are interdependent with the community. Both liberalism and communitarian moral education have their own effectiveness and limitations in our moral education. Therefore, it is necessary to find out how to integrate the two moral education appropriately and to enhance the effect of moral education by taking advantage of the two moral education with different qualities. In this respect, communitarian liberalism that harmonizes and integrates both is suggested. In this article, I explored what paradigm moral education should be developed from the viewpoint of communitarian liberalism newly raised. Ultimately, moral education should provide students with time and space to explore the phenomena surrounding them, reflect on their inner morality, and pursue the process of practicing in their own lives, starting from their own experience world. For this purpose, the curriculum of moral education should be able to cultivate students' habits of practicing basic moral norms and manners from a communal liberal point of view, and to develop moral thinking and judgment that can rationally solve various moral problems. It shows the direction that the communal liberal moral and ethical education should aim to “go through the courtyard of the habit and to the palace of reason”.
