국문 초록

코로나19 바이러스 방역을 위해 도입된 사회적 거리두기와 방역지침은 결혼식 준비와 진행에도 상당한 영향을 주었다. 결혼식과 관련하여 주류 한국사회에서 통용되어 온 각종 관습, 이를테면 적정 하객 수에 대한 인식이나 하객을 초대하고 그에 답하는 방식, 그간 통용되어온 예식 절차 등은 외부 요인에 의해 변화가 강제되었다. 본 연구는 이렇게 여러 가지 제약속에서 실제로 결혼식을 치른 부부들의 경험에 주목하여 이들이 어떤 어려움을 겪었고, 어떻게 대응해 나갔는지 살펴본 사례연구이다. 이들은 엄격한 방역지침 아래 제한된 하객 인원수에 맞춰 예식을 준비하고, 혹시라도 있을지 모를 바이러스 감염 방지를 위해 온갖 노력을 기울였다. 또한 SNS와 동영상 등 온라인 기술을 활용하여 제약된 조건 속에서도 최대한 결혼의의미를 찾기 위해 할 수 있는 방안을 찾아냈다. 한편 팬데믹 기간을 겪으며 기존에 관행적으로 진행되던 결혼식의 일부 요소에도 변화가 나타나기 시작했다. 이 같은 변화는 이미 잠재해있었으나 한국의 전통적인 가족 가치와 문화적 관성으로 인해 억눌려 있던 움직임이 팬데믹과 방역지침을 기회 삼아 현실화한 측면이 있다. 본 연구는 ‘코로나19 시대’의 결혼식에 관한고찰을 통해 ‘포스트 코로나 시대’ 결혼식의 변화 가능성을 타진한다.

영문 초록

The social distancing and quarantine policies introduced to combat the COVID-19 virus have had a significant impact on the planning and conduct of weddings. Various customs that were accepted in mainstream Korean society regarding weddings, such as the perception of the appropriate number of guests, the way guests are invited and responded to, and the customary ceremony procedures, have been forced to change by external factors. This case study focuses on the experiences of couples who actually organized their weddings under these constraints, exploring the challenges they faced and how they coped. They organized their ceremonies under strict quarantine guidelines and with a limited number of guests, and made every effort to prevent any possible viral infections. They also used online technologies such as social media and video to find ways to make their wedding as meaningful as possible under the constraints. Meanwhile, the pandemic has also begun to change some elements of traditional weddings. In some ways, the pandemic and quarantine guidelines were an opportunity for these changes to materialize, as they were already latent but suppressed by traditional Korean family values and cultural inertia. This study examines weddings in the “COVID-19 era” to explore the possibility of changes in weddings in the “post-COVID era”.
