하당(荷塘) 윤봉의(尹鳳儀)의 충의 사상과 자결 순국

국문 초록

하당(荷塘) 윤봉의(尹鳳儀, 1839~1919)는 거창 안흥리 출신의 유학자로, 1919년 고종의 장례에 망곡(望哭)하여 신하로서의 예를 다한 후, 그 다음날 칼날로 목을 찔러 자결함으로써 고종에 대한 의리와 일제에 항거하는 정신을 표명한 의사(義士)이다. 윤봉의가 남긴 시문과 관련 기록은 『하당유고(荷塘遺稿)』에 수록되어 있다. 『하당유고』는 윤봉의의 손자 윤용수(尹龍洙)의 주도로 1978년 석판본으로 간행되었으며, 2권 1책으로 구성되어 있다. 본 논문에서는 『하당유고』를 바탕으로 하여 윤봉의가 충의를 실천한 삶의 자취를 살펴보고, 남긴 시를 통하여 그의 충의 사상이 시로 형상화된 양상을 살펴본 후, 부록에 실린 만사를 통하여 윤봉의가 순절한 이후의 추모와 선양의 양상에 대하여 차례로 고찰해 보았다. 윤봉의는 가문에 이어지는 충절의 가치를 몸소 실현하기 위하여 누구보다 노력을 기울였고, 고종의 장례에 망곡(望哭)하여 신하로서의 예를 다한 후, 자신의 목숨을 바치는 강렬한 투쟁을 통하여 일제에 항거하는 정신을 표명한 애국지사이다. 『하당유고』에 남겨진 윤봉의의 시를 통하여 그 충의 사상이 형상화된 양상을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 우선 국난의 시기에 나라를 위해 목숨을 바쳤던 열사에 대한 추모와 경외심을 드러낸 만사를 통하여 충절의 가치를 천명하였다. 또한 국가의 운명이 점점 절망적으로 변해가는 상황에서의 비통한 심정을 드러내는 한편, 국가와 군주를 위해 절의를 바치려는 결연한 의지와 일제의 통치에 저항하고자 하는 의지를 시를 통하여 표출하였다. 그리고 스스로 생을 마감하기에 앞서 지은 절명시를 통하여 자결 순국에 대한 비장한 각오와 맹세를 표명하였다. 윤봉의의 자결 순국은 당시 유림들에게 큰 반향을 일으켰으니, 그의 사후 남겨진 만사를 통하여 윤봉의의 자결이 당시 사람들에게 상당한 감화와 각성을 불러일으켰음을 알 수 있었다. 윤봉의의 순절은 남은 사람들로 하여금 살신성인(殺身成仁)의 가치와 사생취의(捨生取義)의 결단에 대해 다시금 깊이 고구해 보는 계기가 되게 하였고, 이는 향후 항일 운동과 민족 자결을 추구하는 자양분이자 동력이 되었다.

영문 초록

Hadang(荷塘) Yun Bong-ui(尹鳳儀, 1839~1919) was a Confucian scholar from Anheung-ri, Geochang. He was a patriotic martyr who expressed his loyalty to King Gojong and his spirit of resistance against Japanese Colonial, after he mourned at King Gojong’s funeral in 1919 and paid his courtesy as a subject, the next day, he committed suicide by stabbing himself in the neck with a sword. The poems and related records left by Yoon Bong-ui are included in the 『Hadang Yugo(荷塘遺稿)』. 『Hadang Yugo』 was published in 1978 as a lithograph edition under the leadership of Yun Yong-su(尹龍洙), Yoon Bong-ui’s grandson, and it consists of two volumes and one book. Based on the 『Hadang Yugo』, this paper examines the traces of Yoon Bong-ui’s life in which he practiced the fidelity, and investigates the aspects that his fidelity thought was embodied in poetry through the writings he left behind. And then it considers the aspects of remembrance and praise of Yun Bong-ui after his martyrdom through the funeral ode included in the appendix. Yun Bong-ui made more efforts than anyone else to personally realize the value of loyalty passed down through his family. He was a patriot who expressed the spirit of resistance against Japanese Colonial through an intense struggle that devoted his life, after he mourned at King Gojong’s funeral and paid his courtesy as a subject. Through the poems of Yun Bong-ui left in the 『Hadang Yugo』, it was able to examine the aspects in which the thought of loyalty was embodied. First of all, he declared the value of fidelity through the funeral ode that revealed the remembrance and awe for the martyrs who had dedicated their lives for the country during the time of national crisis. In addition, while expressing his sorrowful feelings in a situation where the fate of the country was becoming increasingly hopeless, he presented his determination to devote fidelity for the country and the monarch and his will to resist Japanese rule through his poems. He also stated his sincere determination and pledge of suicide for the country through his Death Poem written before ending his life. Yun Bong-ui’s suicide for the country had a great impact on Confucian scholars at the time, and it was found that his suicide caused considerable inspiration and awakening to people of the time through the funeral ode left behind after his death. Yun Bong-ui’s martyrdom served as an opportunity for the remaining people to think deeply about the value of sacrifice oneself to preserve integrity[殺身成仁] and the decision of giving up one’s life for loyalty, which became the nourishment and driving force for the anti-Japanese movement and national suicide for the country in the future.
