어적(漁適) 류중룡(柳仲龍)의 학문과 절의정신 연구

국문 초록

본 논문의 취지는 거창 지역 절의지사 류중룡(柳仲龍, 1558∼1635)의 학문과 절의정신을 고찰하는 것이다. 류중룡은 고려ㆍ조선 시대 사회적 희생과 공헌을 실천한 문화류씨(文化柳氏) 가문의 후예로 생장하였다. 수학기에 부친 및 덕계(德溪) 오건(吳健) 선생을 사사하여 유학(儒學)을 충실히 익히면서, 효(孝)의 실천으로 유학의 이념을 체화(體化)하였다. 청년기에는 임진왜란이 발발하자 의병으로 참전하여 충(忠)을 실천하였다. 사환기에는 당쟁과 간신의 작폐로 혼란했던 광해군조에서 벼슬하면서, 동류(同類)들과 충효의 중요성을 시로 확인하였으며, 부조리한 현실에 타협하지 않고 은둔하는 삶을 선택하였다. 노년에는 거창의 어적정(漁適亭)에서 귀거래(歸去來)의 흥취를 즐기며 여생을 보내고자 하였다. 이처럼 류중룡은 자신의 도를 펼 수 있는지의 여부에 따라 거취를 결정하는 군자의 출처행장(出處行藏)을 실천하였다. 류중룡의 문학에 투영된 삶의 궤적을 살펴보면, 그가 지녔던 내적 신념의 핵심은 바로 ‘충’과 ‘효’였다. 그것은 류중룡이 선조로부터 물려받고, 스승의 가르침으로 훈도받고, 독서와 학문으로 연마한 결과 형성된 것이다. 그리고 그 신념은 임진왜란 시기의 의병 체험과 광해군조의 사환 경험을 통해 축적되고 강화되었다. 충과 효의 내적 신념이 경도되는 정치 현실, 용납할 수 없는 정권의 부패와 부조리 앞에서 류중룡은 굴종보다 저항을, 타협보다 은일을 택하였다. 류중룡이 가슴 깊이 지녔던 충효의 정신은 그를 지탱시키는 원동력이었으며, 세상의 풍파에 당당히 맞설 수 있게 하는 정신적 근간이었다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to examine the scholarship and spirit of loyalty of Ryu Jung-ryong(柳仲龍, 1558-1635), a member of the Jeoluijisa in the Geochang region. Ryu Jung-ryong grew up as a descendant of the Munhwa Ryu family, which practiced social sacrifice and contribution during the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties. During his years of study, he studied Confucianism from his father and Deokgye Oh Geon, and made the Confucian ideals his own by practicing filial piety. In his Young adulthood, when the Imjin War broke out, he participated in the righteous army and practiced the value of loyalty. He worked during the reign of King Gwanghaegun, a period of chaos in the monarchy due to factional strife and corrupt officials. He wrote poems with his colleagues singing about the importance of loyalty and filial piety, and chose a life of seclusion rather than compromise with the absurd reality. In his old age, he wanted to spend the rest of his life enjoying the pleasures of returning home at Eojeokjeong in Geochang. In this way, Ryu Jung-ryong practiced the nobleman's way of deciding his future path based on whether he could spread his own path. Looking at the trajectory of Ryu Jung-ryong's life reflected in his literature, the core of his inner beliefs were ‘loyalty’ and ‘filial piety.’ It was formed as a result of what Ryu Jung-ryong inherited from his ancestors, was instructed by his teacher, and practiced through reading and study. And that belief was accumulated and strengthened through his experience as a volunteer soldier during the Japanese Invasion of Korea and his experience as a servant under King Gwanghaegun. He chose resistance rather than submission and hiding rather than compromising when faced with the political reality that conflicted with his inner beliefs and the unacceptable corruption and absurdity of the regime. Ryu Jung-ryong's spirit of loyalty and filial piety became for him the driving force that enabled him to endure the world and the mental foundation that enabled him to face trials.
