This study investigates the transmission of ethnic music and its impact on cultural identity among students and teachers at Communication University of Kunming, a region rich in ethnic diversity and musical traditions. In a rapidly modernizing world, traditional forms of music face the risk of erosion, particularly as formal educational systems prioritize mainstream music. Using a quantitative approach, the study surveyed 100 participants to assess how ethnic music is taught and its influence on personal and collective identity. The findings reveal significant differences between students and teachers in terms of engagement with ethnic music, with teachers demonstrating a deeper connection and stronger perceptions of its cultural value. The study also explores the challenges posed by modernization and globalization, offering implications for enhancing ethnic music preservation within modern educational frameworks. The results suggest that the university plays a pivotal role in safeguarding these traditions and that more collaborative efforts with local ethnic communities could enhance this cultural transmission.
