기후 위기 및 인류세의 관점과 종교연구

국문 초록

기후변화가 인간을 포함하여 수많은 생명체의 생존을 위협할 정도로 심각하다는 것, 그리고 바로 인간이 기후변화를 초래했다는 인식은 지금 인류가 이전과는 다른 시대에 진입했다는 생각을 불러일으켰다. 이 글에서는 세계화(globalization)와는 구별되는 행성화(planetarization)의 의미를 설명하면서 새로운 시대를 보는 관점을 논의하였다. 이런 맥락에서 인류세를 비롯하여 그와 연관된 용어가 등장하게 되었다. 이 글은 인류세 개념의 유용성을 수용하면서 기후위기와 인류세의 문제 틀이 종교연구에 어떤 영향을 미치고 있는지 검토한다. 우선 기후변화를 문제로서 인지하게 만드는데, 종교의 추진력 및 테크닉이 필요하다는 주장을 살펴본다. 지금도 기후변화를 부인하고 있는 사람이 적지 않은 점에서 알 수 있듯이, 기후변화는 그 성격 상, 문제의 대상으로 삼기가 어렵고, 일상의 습관을 바꾸게 만드는 것은 더욱 힘겹다. 그런데 종교가 기후위기의 매듭을 푸는데 기여할 수 있다고 보는 관점이 있으므로, 이에 관해 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 이어서 앨런스트래선(Alan Strathern)과 마셜 살린스(Marshall Sahlins)의 내재주의(immanentism)와 초월주의(transcendentalism)를 통해 축의 시대라는 대전환기의 성격을 알아본다. 기후안정화를 바탕으로 한 축의 시대를 준거로 기후불안정에 접어든 지금의 시대의 성격을 파악해볼 수 있는 것이다. 기후위기 시대를 거론하는 수준은 이전의 물음과 해답의 체제를 전면적으로 재검토하는 수준이다. ‘문명이 죽는 법을 배워야 하는 시대’에는 우리가 이미 알고 있는 것, 우리가 당연하게 여기는 우선 순위를 다시 생각해야 하는 것이다. 그동안 부동의 중심을 차지하고 있던 인간의 자리와 객체로 대립했던 자연, 인간과 동물, 정신과 물질, 몸과 마음, 삶과 죽음 등 이전의 모든 기본값에 대해 근본적 물음을 던져야 할 기회가 기후위기로 인해 도래하였다. 지금까지 인간 및 인간집단 이해에 필수적이고도 효율적인 요소를 담당했던 종교에 관한 관점 역시 예외가 될 수 없으므로, 그동안 종교를 보던 기본적 시각을 살펴볼 때가 된 것이다.

영문 초록

Climate change is so serious that it threatens the survival of many living organisms, including humans, and humans are believed to be a major contributor to climate change, giving rise to the idea that we live in a different era than before. This article discusses how we view this new era, explaining the difference between globalization and planetarization. In this context, the term A nthro pocene and its a ssociated terms have emerged. This article embraces the usefulness of the concept of the Anthropocene and examines how the framing of the climate crisis and the Anthropocene as a problem is affecting the study of religion. It begins by discussing the argument that the impetus and techniques of religion are needed to make climate change acknowledged as a problem. By its very nature, climate change is difficult to problematize, and even harder to get people to change their daily habits, as evidenced by the number of people who still deny climate change. However, there are some views that religion can make an important contribution to addressing the climate crisis. In the following, we will explore the nature of the Axial Age through the lens of immanentism and transcendentalism by Alan Strathern and Marshall Sahlins. Based on the axial era based on climate stabilization, we can understand the nature of the current era of climate instability. In the era of the climate crisis, it requires a complete rethinking of our previous system of questions and answers. It needs to rethink what we already know and the priorities we take for granted. The climate crisis presents us with an opportunity to radically question all previous dichotomies and their defaults: human and nature, human and animal, spirit and matter, body and mind, life and death, and so on. Religion has been an integral and effective component of our understanding of humans and human groups, and it's time to take a fresh look at the way we view it.
