서유구 『임원경제지』의 서예적 가치 연구

국문 초록

조선 후기 실학자이자 농정가인 풍석(楓石) 서유구(徐有榘, 1764-1845)는 농촌[林園]에 살면서 뜻을 기르는 것을 목적으로 농사 · 음식 · 의류 · 의료 등 16개 분야를 3만여 가지 지식을 여러 문헌에서 인용하여 이를 백과사전 형식[類書]으로 정리한 『임원경제지(林園經濟志)』를 편찬하였다. 『임원경제지』에는 서예 관련 내용 또한 담고 있는데, 본 연구는 『임원경제지(林園經濟志)』에 실린 서예 기사의 편제와 내용을 분석하고 그 특징과 의의를 고찰하였다. 『임원경제지』의 서예 기사는 주로 「유예지(遊藝志)」와 「이운지(怡雲志)」에 실려 있는데, 각 지(志)에는 대주제와 하위 주제를 세부적으로 편성하였으며 성격에 따라 기사를 인용하여 수록하였다. 기사 내용은 서예사, 기초 학서 이론, 문방사우 용법 및 종류, 도장(인장), 한국과 중국의 금석문 등 서예 분야 전반에 걸친다. 편제가 체계적이고 주제와 내용이 풍부하여 기념비적인 서예 이론서라고 할 수 있다. 다음으로 인용 문헌과 빈도, 주석(【 】)과 안설(案說)을 분석하여 특정 문헌의 높은 인용 빈도와 주석 및 안설의 쓰임 양상 등의 특징을 고찰하였으며, 다른 유서와 서예적 측면에서 비교할 때 내용이나 전문성에서 부족하지 않다는 점과 편제와 내용을 서유구의 서예 인식과 연결 지어 서유구라는 인물의 서예에 대한 관심이 『임원경제지』에 적극적으로 반영되었다는 점, 한국서예사 연구의 자료로 활용 가능하다는 점을 밝히며 『임원경제지』의 가치와 의의를 조명하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

Pungseok (楓石) Seo Yu-gu (徐有榘, 1764-1845), a late Joseon dynasty scholar and agronomist, compiled the ImwonGyeongjeji (林園經濟志), an encyclopedic work covering over 30,000 pieces of knowledge across 16 fields, including agriculture, food, clothing, and medicine, by quoting various texts. This work was created with the purpose of cultivating one's aspirations while living in a rural setting. Imwon Gyeongjeji also contains content related to calligraphy, and this study analyzes the organization and content of the calligraphy articles in Imwon Gyeongjeji and examines their characteristics and significance. The calligraphy articles in Imwon Gyeongjeji are mainly found in the sections Yu Ye Ji (遊藝志) and Yi Wun Ji (怡雲志). Each section is systematically organized into major themes and sub-themes, with articles quoted and included according to their nature. The content spans various aspects of calligraphy, including the history of calligraphy, basic theories of learning calligraphy, the usage and types of the Four Treasures of the Study, seals, and inscriptions from Korea and China. The systematic organization, richness of themes, and content make this a monumental theoretical work on calligraphy. Furthermore, by analyzing the cited texts and their frequency, as well as the usage patterns of annotations (【 】) and supplementary notes (案), the study explores characteristics such as the high citation frequency of certain texts and the use of annotations and supplementary notes. Compared to other encyclopedic works, Imwon Gyeongjeji is highlighted as superior in terms of content and expertise. The study also connects the organization and content of the calligraphy articles to Seo Yu-gu's understanding of calligraphy, demonstrating that his interest in calligraphy is actively reflected in Imwon Gyeongjeji. The study aims to illuminate the value and significance of Imwon Gyeongjeji as a valuable resource for the study of Korean calligraphy history.
