참회의 신학 - ‘메모리아’와 ‘포살’에 관한 기독교와 불교의 대화

국문 초록

이 글은 참회에 관한 기독교와 불교의 종교 철학적 대화이다. 기독교 전통에서는 아우구스티누스(St. Augustine of Hippo)의 『고백록』(Confessions)에 나타난 ‘메모리아’(memoria)의 이론을 중심으로 참회의 기억을 살펴본다. 불교의 전통에서는 붓다가 설법한 ‘포살’(uposatha) 전통을 중심으로 초기 불교가 전한 참회의 개념을 성찰해 본다. 이 대화를 통해 참회에 관한 기독교와 불교의 존재론과 인식론의 유사점과 차이점을 살펴본다. 두 전통은 각각 ‘신성의 절대성’과 ‘불성의 연기성’에 기초한 참회의 자발성과 개방성의 특징이 있다. 참회의 존재론적인 해석은 ‘기억의 내향성’이 각각 신적 근원성과 자성의 연기성으로 대조적 특징을 이룬다. 참회의 인식론적 해석은 ‘메모리아의 선재성’과 ‘포살의 상기설’로 각각의 고유한 관점이 있다. 포살과 자자를 통한 여법화합갈마는 공동체의 청정함을 위한 윤리적 가치를 강조한다. 참회의 기억을 통해 개인과 사회, 산자와 죽은 자, 인간과 신성의 관계성은 복원되며 진정한 공동체의 화합이 가능해진다. 참회의 신학은 기억과 화해를 통한 신적 정의와 선정의 평화가 성취될 수 있도록 잊혀진 공동의 기억에 기초한 참회의 도덕적 책임을 강조한다. 이 글은 아만(我慢)의 문화를 극복하고 개인과 공동체의 성스러운 내면성의 기억을 회복하기 위한 한국적 참회 신학의 지향점을 제시한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to present the possibility of a Korean theology of penitence through inter-religious dialogue between Christianity and Buddhism. Augustine’s concept of ‘memoria’ and Buddha’s notion of ‘uposatha’ will be examined in a comparative way. The ontological and epistemological interpretation of the concepts shall be discussed in relation to the ethical implications highlighting the religio-philosophical similarities and differences of each. The two ideas have their own characteristics of ’spontaneity’ and ‘openness’ regarding penitence. The ontological interpretation of penitence commonly exhibits an ‘inwardness of memory,’ which distinctly contrasts divine origins of Christianity with the dependent co-origination of the Buddha-nature. The epistemological interpretation of penitence emphasizes the unique perspectives characterized by the ‘pre-existence of memoria’ and the ‘recollection theory of memory,’ respectively. This paper proposes theological orientations of penitence to sublimate selfishness and cultural narcissism in a way of restoring the sacred interiority of memory towards reconciliation and harmony of the community.
