국문 초록

인간의 마음은 신경과학의 주요 연구 분야이다. 최근 양심에 관한 신경과학의 발견은 전통적인 인간에 대한 이해의 변화를 요구하고 있다. 신경과학의 관점에서 양심이란 뇌 안에서 일어나는 생물학적 현상이다. 뇌를 이루는 복잡한 세포와 신경망 회로를 통해 발생하는 현상을 관찰하고 해석하는 작업이다. 이를 통하여 인간 양심의 기저에 자리하는 생물학적 특징과 다른 동물과의 유사성 혹은 특수성 등을 살핀다. 또한 인간 마음에 자리하는 양심이 형성된 근원적 원인을 진화생물학적 관점에서 살피고 있다. 그 결과 이 관점은 인간 양심에 대한 개인적이고 미시적 차원에서 이뤄진다. 동시에 양심은 개인을 넘어 다양한 개체 간의 관계와 집단적인 상호 작용으로 축적된 결과이기도 하다. 이 과정에서 양심은 역사와 세대를 관통하고 각기 다른 상황과 맥락에 따라 구성되고 재형성된다. 즉 양심은 지극히 개별적이고 본능적인 생물학적 반응인 동시에, 다양한 집단 구성원에 의해 형성 및 수용된 문화적 개념이기도 하다. 본 논문은 양심에 관한 신경과학 철학의 논의를 간략히 소개하고, 이어서 기독교 전통에서 양심의 개념을 어떻게 이해해 왔는지를 살필 것이다. 이를 통하여 양심에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히는 것과 양심에 관한 통합적인 논의를 위한 신학적 논거를 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여, 마음에 관한 신경과학의 관점을 소개하고, 이어서 패트리샤 처칠랜드와 안토니오 다마지오의 논의를 살필 것이다. 그 후에 본 논문의 주요 논의로서 양심에 관한 인문학적 관점을 주로 그리스도교 전통 안에서 어거스틴, 아퀴나스, 루터, 웨슬리, 본회퍼 순으로 살펴볼 것이다.

영문 초록

The human mind is a major field of study in neuroscience. Recent discoveries in neuroscience about conscience call for a change in the traditional understanding of the human being. From a neuroscience perspective, conscience is a biological phenomenon that occurs in the brain. It is a work that observes and interprets phenomena that occur through the complex cells and neural network circuits that make up the brain. Through this, we examine the biological characteristics that underlie the human conscience and the similarities or particularities with other animals. In addition, the fundamental cause of the formation of conscience in the human mind is examined from the perspective of evolutionary biology. As a result, This perspective takes place on a personal and micro level of the human conscience. At the same time, conscience is the result of the accumulation of relationships and collective interactions between various entities beyond the individual. In this process, conscience is constructed and reshaped through history and generations, each according to different circumstances and contexts. In other words, conscience is not only a highly individual and instinctive biological response, but also a cultural concept that has been formed and accepted by members of various groups. This paper will briefly introduce the discussion of the neuroscience philosophy of conscience , and then examine how the concept of conscience has been understood in the Christian tradition. The purpose of this paper is to broaden the understanding of conscience and to provide theological arguments for an integrated discussion of conscience. To this end, we will introduce neuroscience perspectives on the mind, followed by discussions with Patricia Churchland and Antonio Damasio. Thereafter, as the main discussion of this paper, the humanistic perspective on conscience is primarily in the Christian tradition Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Wesley, and Bonhoeffer.
