국문 초록

고려 중기 혜덕왕사 소현은 왕실과 밀접한 관계를 가지며, 유가종 교단을 이끄는 승려로 활동하였다. 소현은 문종 때 유가종 승려 해린에게 출가하였다. 인주이씨 집안 출신인 소현은 왕실의 외척이었다. 문종은 여섯째 왕자 왕탱을 소현의 제자로 출가시켰다. 소현은 문종과 누이인 인예태후의 후원을 받고, 왕탱을 제자로 삼는 등 왕실과 긴밀한 관계를 맺었다. 그는 국왕의 초빙을 받아, 송나라 사절단의 무사 귀환을 비는 궁중 법회에서 설법하였다. 정치･외교적으로 중요한 왕실의 행사를 주관하였다. 선종 때 소현은 왕으로부터 친서와 미륵탱화를 하사받았다. 곧이어 승통의 승계를 받고 현화사 주지로서 유가종의 지도자가 되었다. 왕의 초청으로 장경도량과 같은 궁중 법회에서 강설하였다. 그는 일찍이 금산사 주지로 있을 때 광교원을 신축하였다. 이 광교원에서 유식학에 관한 章疏를 교정하고, 이를 간행하였다. 이 일은 의천 등 왕실이 주도하는 敎藏 간행 사업과 관련이 있었다. 소현은 왕실의 교장 사업에 협력하였다. 그는 의천과 함께 교장을 수집하고 간행함으로써 불교를 널리 알리고 교학을 발전시키는 데 힘썼다. 숙종이 즉위하자 소현은 궁중에서 인왕경을 강설하여 나라와 왕실의 안녕을 빌었다. 소현이 입적하자 숙종은 그를 왕사로 추봉하고, 국가 차원에서 장례를 치르게 하였다. 예종은 소현을 기리는 탑비를 금산사에 건립하도록 하여, 그의 업적을 공인하였다. 소현이 활동하던 시기 유가종 교단은 전성기를 맞았다. 그가 유가종의 교세를 확장하고, 사원을 건축하거나 불교 서적을 간행하는 등 불사를 추진한 것은 인주이씨 집안과 왕실의 지원에 힘입어서였다. 고려 왕실에서는 소현의 활동을 후원함으로써 그가 이끄는 유가종 교단에서 국왕 등 왕실을 지지하기를 바랐다.

영문 초록

Hyedeok Wangsa Sohyeon, a prominent monk during the mid-Goryeo period, held a close relationship with the royal family and led the Yuga sect of Buddhism. Under King Munjong, Sohyeon became a monk under the Yuga monk Haerin. As a member of the Inju Yi clan, he was a relative of the royal family. King Munjong ordained his sixth prince, Wangtaeng, under Sohyeon. With the patronage of King Munjong and his sister, Queen Inye, Sohyeon formed a close bond with the royal family by taking Prince Wangtaeng as his disciple. He was invited by the king to deliver a sermon at a royal court ceremony, praying for the safe return of the Song Dynasty envoy. This demonstrated his involvement in politically and diplomatically significant royal events. During King Seonjong's reign, Sohyeon received a personal letter and a Maitreya Buddha painting from the king. He soon received the rank of Seungtong and became the abbot of Hyeonhwa Temple, leading the Yuga sect. He was invited by the king to preach at court ceremonies. Earlier, while serving as the abbot of Geumsan Temple, he constructed Gwanggyowon, a sub-temple within Geumsan, where he edited books on the Yogacara philosophy, a central doctrine of the Yuga sect. This work was closely tied to the royal-sponsored project of compiling and publishing commentaries on Buddhist scriptures. Sohyeon actively collaborated in this project, working alongside figures like Uicheon to disseminate Buddhist teachings. When King Sukjong ascended the throne, Sohyeon delivered a lecture on the Inwang Sutra at the palace, praying for the well-being of the nation and the royal family. Upon Sohyeon's passing, King Sukjong bestowed upon him the posthumous title of royal preceptor and ordered a state funeral. King Yejong further honored Sohyeon by erecting a stele at Geumsan Temple, commemorating his achievements. During Sohyeon's lifetime, the Yuga sect reached its zenith. His ability to expand the sect's influence and undertake numerous Buddhist projects, such as temple construction and publication, was largely due to the support of the Inju Yi clan and the royal family. The Goryeo royal family, in turn, hoped that by supporting Sohyeon and the Yuga sect, they would secure the sect's allegiance.
