국문 초록

본 논문은 18세기~19세기에 단성현 사족의 서원활동 전개 과정과 목적을 알아보았다. 특히, 단성현 사족의 서원활동 중에서도 이 글에서 주목한 부분은 두 가지이다. 하나는 私設祠院 증가 현상이었고, 다른 하나는 19세기에 ‘鄕案子孫’이 강조되고 있다는 점이었다. 이 두 가지 현상은 모두 국가의 정책과 밀접한 관련이 있었다. 단성현 사족들은 국가의 서원정책에 대응하여, 사설사원을 설치하였다. 정국 흐름의 변동 그리고 서얼허통과 같은 정책 변화에 대응하여 단성현 사족은 ‘향안자손’으로서 정체성을 강조해야만 했다. 즉, 이런 서원활동은 국가의 정책 변화 속에서, 단성현 사족의 이른바 ‘진짜 사족’이 되기 위한 목적으로 진행된 하나의 사회운동이었던 셈이다.

영문 초록

This study examines the development and objectives of the activities of the sajok (local gentry) in Danseong-hyeon during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly focusing on two notable aspects of their seowon (private academies) activities. First, the phenomenon of the increase in private shrines, and second, the emphasis on ‘hyanganjason’ (descendants listed in the local registry) in the 19th century. Both phenomena were closely related to national policies. The sajok of Danseong-hyeon responded to the state's seowon policies by establishing private shrines. In response to changing political trends and policy shifts such as the lifting of restrictions on secondary status groups, the sajok of Danseong-hyeon emphasized their identity as ‘hyanganjason.’ In other words, these seowon activities were a form of social movement carried out by the sajok of Danseong-hyeon to assert their identity as ‘true sajok’ amidst changing state policies.
