국문 초록

This study examines the developmental changes in speech rate by exploring the relationship between age and utterance length among Korean adolescent speakers, utilizing data from the Korean Spontaneous Speech Corpus developed by Yun et al. (2015). Comprising a balanced demo- graphic of ten adolescents from Seoul and Gyeonggi regions, the analysis focuses on quantifying utterance length, excluding non-verbal interruptions to isolate linguistically productive speech elements. Employing a Linear Mixed-Effects Model, this study assesses the impact of utterance length, age, and gender on the speech rate, incorporating random effects to capture individual variability. Our findings indicate that increases in utterance length significantly correlate with faster speech rates, with age modifying this relationship, whereas gender does not show a significant effect. These results highlight the crucial aspects of linguistic proficiency development during adolescence and offer implications for educational strategies aimed at enhancing language skills, thereby enriching our understanding of language development and informing more effective linguistic interventions.
