영문 초록

Hwang Sang (1788~1863?), whose pen name is Chiwon(卮園), was a disciple of Jeong Yakyong(丁若鏞), whose pen name is Dasan(茶山), who taught him when he was banished in Gangjin(康津) for 18 years. He was from an Ajeon(衙前) [petty official of provincial town] family, who shared the human difficulty with Dasan together, in the early days, as one of Dasan’s disciples who assisted him devotedly. Hwang Sang was under Dasan’s instruction at his age of 15 years, studied hard sincerely, and received particular expectation together with Lee Cheong from Dasan. Jeong Yakjeon (丁若銓), an elder brother of Dasan, admired that such a talent was there on the foot of Mt. Wolchulsan(月出山). He met with Jeong Hakyeon(丁學淵) brothers, Dasan’s sons and disciples, Buddhist priests of Daedunsa(大芚寺) Temple including Aamhyejang(兒庵惠藏), and Choeuseonsa(草衣禪師) in those days. They were the maternity ward of Dasanhak(茶山學) that represented the Silhakpa(實學派) [realism school] in the 19thcentury. Chiwon, Hwang Sang, could not join the Dasan Chodang, as a disciple of Eupjung, but he shared tenacious compassion with Dasan until his return after he was freed from the banishment. Afterwards, Hwang Sang was living in seclusion at Baekjeokdong(白積洞) in Mt. Cheongaesan(天蓋山), who was disclosed to the world gradually as he came to the capital city to attend the master’s 60thwedding anniversary in 1836. The tea culture in Korea met the restoration period, as the Choeu Tea(草衣茶) of Choeuseonsa was introduced to the prosperous noble classes in the capital, afterwards. In the meanwhile, Hwang Sang met with Aamhyejang, Suryongsaekseong(袖龍賾性), and Choeuseonsa to come in contact with the tea life naturally, and left the Geolmyeongsi for Choeu in his anthology, 『Chiwonyugo』. This paper is intended to review the study of Hwang Sang, his human charm, and his tea life while associating with them.
