국문 초록

이 연구는 한국 교회의 성장 정체와 탈교회화 현상의 요인을 분석하고 가톨릭교회의사목적 대응을 모색한다. 현재 한국사회의 탈교회화 현상은 세속화 현상이라는 문화적 맥락과 팬데믹이라는 자연환경 요소의 결합 안에서 관찰된다. 탈종교화의 도전에 대한 가톨릭교회의 쇄신과 대응은 시노달리타스 교회운동이라는 틀에서 이루어지고 있다. 이것은 전통과 규범의 일방적 주입과 강조가 아니라, 교회구성원의 경험을 광범위하게 수용하고, 대화하면서 전통의 틀 안에서 식별하는 방법을 취하고 있다. 이러한 방법은 사회적 환경의 변화 특히 근대성의 도전에 대한 전통종교의 대응과 관련된 종교사회학자 피터 버거의 ‘귀납적 대응’ 이론과 친화성을 공유한다. 가톨릭교회의 탈교회화의 주요 요인에는 신앙의 사사화, 영성의 세속화 그리고 평등권의 탈구경험이 있다. 이 세 가지 요소들은 다중적 압력요인으로 서로 교차하며 탈교회화를 추동하고 있다. 이러한 탈교회화에 대한 가톨릭교회의 대응을 시노달리타스 교회운동의 맥락에서 모색하였다. 첫째, 교회의 사회적 공헌활동 강화에 주목해야 한다. 시노드 교회는 신앙의 사사화에 맞선 공동체적 역량과 연대를 강화하기 위해 교회의 사명을 사회적으로 확장해야 한다. 둘째, 영성자본을 강화해야 한다. 세속화된 영성들이 경쟁하는 공간에서, 교회는 개인들의 영적 요구와 다원성이 표출되는 실존적 공간을 창출할 수 있어야 한다. 셋째, 환대의 영성을 제도적이고 문화적으로 뿌리내리기이다. 성직주의로 대변되는 교회 내 불평등 상황을 극복하기 위해 필요한 것은 타자에 대한 경청을 핵심으로 하는 환대의 영성이다. 환대를 통해 교회는 보다 평등한 형제적 친교 안에서 가난한 사람을 향한 교회의 사명을 효율적으로 수행할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study delves into the stagnation of growth and the phenomenon of dechurching within the Korean Church, specifically focusing on identifying the contributing factors and exploring the Catholic Church’s pastoral responses. In contemporary Korean society, the trend towards dechurching is observed against a backdrop of cultural secularization and the impacts of the pandemic. The Catholic Church is addressing the challenges posed by dechurching through the lens of the Synodal Church movement. This approach moves away from the unilateral imposition of tradition and norms, opting instead for a methodology that widely embraces the experiences of church members, engaging in dialogue, and discerning within the framework of tradition. This strategy aligns with Peter Berger’s theory of ‘inductive response’, which examines the engagement of traditional religions with societal changes, particularly the challenges brought about by modernity. The principal factors contributing to the Catholic Church’s dechurching include the privatization of faith, the secularization of spirituality, and experiences of disengagement concerning ecclesiastical authority and communal rights. These elements act as multifaceted pressures that intersect and collectively propel the phenomenon of dechurching. The response of the Catholic Church to these challenges is sought within the Synodal Church movement, emphasizing three key areas for action. Firstly, there is a need to enhance the church’s social engagement activities, positioning the church as a community capable of strengthening collective capacity and solidarity in opposition to the privatization of faith. Secondly, it is crucial to bolster spiritual capital; the church must forge spaces where the spiritual needs and diversity of individuals are acknowledged and met amidst competing secular spiritualities. Lastly, the institutional and cultural embedding of a spirituality of hospitality is imperative. Overcoming the inequalities symbolized by clericalism requires a foundational shift towards a spirituality that prioritizes listening and openness to the other. Through hospitality, the church can more effectively fulfill its mission to the impoverished within a more egalitarian and fraternal community framework.
