한국전쟁의 서사전략과 서사의도에 대한 연구

국문 초록

아시아계 미국인 작가들 중의 걸출한 작가로서 이창래와 하진이 당대 미국 아시아계 문학계 내지 전 미국 문화계에서 큰 관심을 받고 있다. 이창래는 2011년에 『생존자』를 통해 데이턴문학평화상을 수상했고 퓰리처상의 최종 수상후보에 거명되었다. 하진은 2005년에 소설 『전쟁 쓰레기』로 다시 한번 펜포크너상을 받았고 퓰리처상의 최종 수상후보에 오르게 되었다. 그러나 두 작품이 미국에서 센세이션을 일으킨 한가지 중요한 원인이 두 작품이 모두 20세기 50년대에 발생한 한국전쟁에 관한 ‘트라우마 서사’였음을 지적하는 연구는 많지 않다. 두 편의 소설은 모두 이 중대한 역사사건에 대한 ‘전례를 타파한 작품’으로 인정받았다. 본문에서는 두 작품의 역사배경과 사회적 관계, 문학 창작 등 측면에서 관련 작가 작품에 대한 비교연구를 위해 기초를 다졌다. 두 작품에서 한국전쟁 트라우마에 대한 서사전략과 서사의도 간의 차이점과 공통점을 비교하고자 한다. 본문을 통해 전쟁 파괴성의 본질을 폭로하고, 피해자의 영혼의 상처를 어루만지면서 역사를 거울로 삼아서 비참하고 침통한 역사가 재발하는 것을 방지하려는 두 작가의 의욕을 조명해보려 한다.

영문 초록

As prominent figures among Asian American writers, Chang-rae Lee and Ha Jin have attracted many attentions in the contemporary Asian American and even American literary circles. In 2011, Chang-rae Lee was awarded the Dayton Literary Peace Prize and nominated for Pulitzer Prize because of his novel The Surrendered. While Ha Jin's novel War Trash in 2005 also earned him the Faulkner PEN Award and a Pulitzer Prize nomination. One of the key reasons both works have made events in the United States is that they are both “trauma narratives” centered around the Korean War in the 1950s. These two novels are also seen as groundbreaking works that tackle this significant historical event, providing a foundation for comparative studies of relevant authors’ works in terms of historical context, social relations, and literary creation. This paper, therefore, compares the narrative strategies and intentions concerning the traumas of the Korean War in these two works, highlighting both their similarities and differences. Together with the authors, it aims to expose the destructive nature of war, soothe the souls of the traumatized, learn from history, and prevent the painful recurrence of history.
